Lydia POV
I think we all have experienced the feeling of regret. We all have a handful of moments we wish we could change. A collection of "what if?"s and "if only"s. I have more than I'd like to admit. And they all involve Stiles Stilinski.
•Junior year of high school•
"Hey Lydia." Said my newest friend Stiles with a smile. He was new to our school and didn't have too many friends. I felt bad for him. It must be hard being the new kid in high school, especially if it's in junior year. I had befriended him when I found out he was in my AP biology class. We got paired as lab partners on his first day. We hit it off immediately."Hi." I said back and pushed a lock of hair behind my ear. It was no use though, because it tumbled right back into my face again.
"Here, let me help you." Stiles said. He swiftly tucked the hair back behind my ear and gave me his infamous smirk. I looked down so he wouldn't see my cheeks heat up. I may have a tiny crush on him. Okay, big crush. I'm pretty sure he likes me back, or maybe I'm just delusional. It's been eating me up inside, and I just had to confront him about how I felt.
"Stiles, can I say something?" I asked timidly.
"Of course." He answered. His expression softened and he gave me his full attention.
"I'll just come right out and say this. I like you. I mean, I like you like you. And you can tell me if I'm wrong, but I think you like me too." I confessed. I had practiced saying this a million times in my mirror. But having to say it to his face made me forget how to speak. He was quiet.
"Please say something. The silence is killing me." I said nervously. Stiles's eyes travels up and down my face. Finally, he broke the tension by leaning forward and planting a kiss on my lips. We broke apart and I smiled.
"You were right." He said gently.
I grinned.
"I love being right."• 4 years later•
Stiles and I were walking around Beacon hills after a date. He was acting very strange. He wouldn't hold my hand and barely made eye contact with me the whole night.
"Stiles, can we please stop pretending nothing's wrong?" I blurted. He froze in his tracks. His eyes remained glued to the ground as he turned to face me.
"Look at me." I said softly.
He brought his head up but wouldn't look me in the eyes.
"I said look at me." I repeated, this time it came out as an order. Stiles guilty eyes met mine. He was silent.
"You did something bad, didn't you?"
His eyes began to water. His gaze trailed down my face, landing on my chin. The coward couldn't even look at me.
"I'm about to loose you, aren't I?" I continued.
"I...I was with someone else." Stiles admitted. His voice cracked on "else."
"I was right." I said weakly. "I hate being right."
"I am so sorry." Stiles pleaded, his voice was shaking.
"I'm sorry too." I said.
He raised an eyebrow.
"I'm sorry I ever met you."
I turned my back to him and ran off.
I could hear him screaming my name behind me. I didn't turn back. I couldn't. That love is in the past.•6 months later•
I hated bars. Everyones drunk and broken in one way or another. My graduating class has decided on a small high school reunion since we all just finished junior year of college. I took a sip from my drink and looked around. My heart nearly stopped entirely when I spotted a familiar chestnut haired boy. We made eye contact and he made his way over to me. I gulped.
"Hey Lydia." Stiles said as he approached me.
"Hi Stiles." I answered dismissively.
"I haven't seen you since...since a while ago." He said. I wanted to cringe at the way he beat around bush and wouldn't mention our breakup.
"Since you cheated on me." I corrected. I had no idea where this sudden burst of confidence came from.
His face heated up in embarrassment.
"Yea. Since then." He said while rubbing the back of his neck.
We had an awkward pause before he tried to instigate a conversation again.
"Well you look great." Stiles spoke up.
"Oh uh, thanks." I said and took another sip of my drink. Despite my attempts to make it obvious that I wasn't interested in catching up, Stiles wouldn't leave.
"So um, are you seeing anyone?" Stiles asked. Poor boy couldn't take a hint.
"I was a while back. He cheated on me with my roommate so we broke up." I answered.
"Sounds familiar." Stiles said softly.
"Yeah. Guess I'm just not enough for people." I joked. His eyes softened.
"Don't say that. You're more than enough." He said assuringly.
"Well I wasn't enough for you." I retorted. I didn't mean to sound so harsh, but I was pretty angry with him. Stiles looked down in shame. He didn't say anything.
"You know, from the day I met you, I had a feeling you'd break my heart." I admitted.
"Guess you were right." Stiles said in an attempt to be humorous.
"Yeah." I paused and looked down at my drink.
"I hate being right."
