It had been two days since Ellie, Eleanor, Emma and TK had received the map and they were already putting it to good use. From the map they had discovered the jungle was at the southwest of the arena, and to the west was what appeared on the map to be a town. They weren't quite sure what to make of it, but they decided the jungle was getting to be too much for them, so they decided to move westwards along the river until they reached the 'town'.
"What do you think the town will be like?" TK asked, sweeping a hanging vine out of the way to allow Eleanor to pass.
"If it is a town." Emma reminded him, and he nodded in response. They continued trekking through the jungle, no one answering his question, as no one had an answer to his question. Ellie was extra careful to not trip over anything or get herself injured in any way.
"Well, I know if there it is a town, it will have all the necessary resources to last us until the end of the games." Ellie broke the silence a few minutes later, and they soon got into a deep discussion of the games, the others and the town.
Eventually, night gained on them and the sun began to set. Before it did, they set up camp and Ellie and Eleanor went to go collect and purify some river water, leaving TK and Emma to set up camp.
Emma was inside the tent, with the flap closed as she rationed everyone's meals, sneaking an extra bite of dried fruit every once in awhile as TK was outside sitting on a log and pondering to himself about the games, and more importantly Max. And somehow, right on cue, as he thought about Max a silver box floated down from the sky, landing right in front of TK.
TK was wary in approaching it. It could very well be a bomb, and he was especially cautious when he saw the writing on the lid, reading: "FOR TK'S EYES ONLY". But he opened the lid and found a piece of paper inside. He removed it and read it.
"TK, where are your manners? You come into an alliance and make it uneven, so now someone needs to die. I say you make it right, and I'll reward you if you do. How would you like a guaranteed spot on the winning three?" TK could not believe his eyes. He had to read it at least a thousand times before he realized just what was being suggested and offered.
He threw the paper to the ground, completely disgusted by the offer. But then he thought about it. Or, more importantly, he thought about Max. He knew undoubtedly he had to win for Max. Max could have easily yelled out in his death, distracted TK and gotten him killed, but instead he remained quiet and let TK escape with his life. And now TK had to honor Max's death. Whatever it takes.
TK picked up a nearby throwing knife and headed towards the tent, and Emma. He opened the flap and stood above Emma, his shadow cast over her. She was sat on the floor, counting dried fruit as TK loomed above her, his knife concealed in his pocket.
"Hi." She said quite distractedly. She turned to him when he didn't reply. "TK?" She asked, concerned about her friend. "Are you okay?"
"Emma. I have to do this for Max." TK said, reaching to his side to remove his knife. As soon as she had looked up at him Emma had been backing away, reaching for the knife in the corner. She had known instantly she couldn't trust TK.
"No you don't." Emma replied determinedly. "If the four of us make it to the end, the gamemaster will kill one of us, we don't have to kill each other." Emma attempted to reason with TK who was freaking out.
"No Emma." He snapped as soon as she finished. "You don't understand. I need to do this." TK whispered as he choked back tears. He raised his knife, now directly above Emma, who couldn't quite reach her knife from where she was. He prepared to bring the knife down upon Emma and end her life, when she lifted her leg and with all her force, kicked him in the crotch. He yelled out in pain as she swiftly ran out of the tent and out into the wilderness.
He recovered quickly and chased after her. Emma was frantically searching for something to defend herself with, and she soon found a sword. TK threw the knife and Emma managed to dodge it by falling to the ground. She grabbed the sword as TK grabbed a sword leaning against the tent. They raised their weapons to each other, circling around the area, waiting for the other to lunge forwards and attack.
Finally, TK did and Emma parried him, their swords clashing. They battled with their swords until Emma managed to cut TK's leg a little. It wasn't a deep cut but it was enough for her to begin running. She ran towards the river, towards Ellie and Eleanor. TK wasn't far behind her, and he quickly gained on her. She looked back and saw him running towards her, his sword outstretched as he ran. She fell to the ground again and TK tripped over her, tumbling nastily to the floor.
She jumped back to her feet and jumped onto his stomach as she continued her mad sprint towards her friends. TK got to his feet slowly, now much angrier than he had been before. Finally, blonde hair came into sight, and Emma screamed for help.
"GUYS TK IS CHASING ME!" She exclaimed, and Eleanor and Ellie promptly turned their heads to face her. They were surprised and panicked by Emma's exclamation, but they were puzzled when they didn't see TK anywhere in sight.
"Emma, what are you talking about?" Ellie inquired, looking behind her for any sign of TK. Emma turned around and noticed TK was no longer behind her. She turned back to them.
"Guys I swear he was just chasing me," She began and Ellie and Eleanor just stared at her utterly perplexed. At that moment, TK dropped down from a tree, and landed directly behind Emma. Ellie gasped and opened her mouth to warn Emma.
TK stuck his sword right through Emma's chest. She gasped and stared at Ellie and Eleanor in horror as blood dripped from her mouth. She fell to the floor, revealing TK, who looked as if he felt no remorse. Ellie and Eleanor were staring at the scene, unable to feel any emotions as shock had completely taken them over.
Eleanor suddenly became overwhelmed by rage. Emma was one of her best friends, and so was TK, so why would he do that? In a blind rage, she removed the throwing knife she had stuffed in her back pocket and hurled it at TK. It became lodged in his leg, and he fell to the ground beside Emma, blood oozing from his wound.
Ellie and Eleanor took this as an opportunity to escape TK and so they ran without a second thought westwards, towards what they hoped would be salvation: the town.
