Kate woke up with a jolt. She gripped the sturdy branch she had chosen to sleep on high up in a tree, afraid her jolt would send her falling to her death. She had been dreaming about Ruby and her death. Kate could have felt anger or sadness or fear towards Lily, but she was just shocked. She had always been adamant on the fact that if anyone in the games went crazy, it would be her. But she had been mistaken.
Kate never would've suspected Lily to go crazy, but honestly she wasn't too surprised. Lily was smart, too smart. She would think of things no one else would, and it drive her crazy. And also, Lily wasn't exactly the most emotionally stable, but Kate never could've predicted she would snap and murder Ruby.
She was shocked by Lily's actions, but not surprised by her insanity. Kate pushed the thoughts about Lily to the back of her mind and began clambering down the large tree. She hadn't had the chance to take any supplies, all she had was her bow and arrows and a small packet of food she had taken before they had gone hunting.
She had passed the tundra now, and she was in the snowy forest. She decided to map out where she thought everyone was. She knew John had run south to the non-snowy forest, and she knew Lily was still in the tundra. She knew Yash, Timtam, Michael, TK, Max and Ricky were at the cornucopia, and she knew Ellie, Eleanor and Emma were in the jungle, but she couldn't be sure that they were there, because she didn't expect them to stay in the same place the whole time.
Kate hadn't seen where Amy, Amelia and Kriti had gone, and for all she knew they were all dead. However, she suspected they were forest, as it was the only uninhabited area.
Kate kept moving, and whenever she felt tired, she reminded herself of Ruby, which motivated her to continue forwards. And if that didn't work she thought of Michael. And that always worked.
Finally, the field came into sight. Kate began jogging, as that was all the energy she had left. She fell to her knees at the edge of the snowy forest, unable to continue. She fell asleep right there, her arm in the field and the rest of her in the snow.
It was practically pitch black when she woke up. She couldn't see anything at first, but eventually her eyes began to adjust and she could see more clearly. She saw the cornucopia, but she couldn't see inside it. She saw a figure far away walking around the perimeter of the cornucopia. She ducked behind a large tree to avoid being seen, just in case it was someone who wouldn't welcome her. When he came around the cornucopia, she could only just make out his face. And it was Michael.
She picked up her bow and drew an arrow, pointing it at him. She emerged from behind the tree and slowly approached him. He turned his head and leaped backwards in surprise. It had been three weeks and they hadn't seen a single person, so he was shocked to see Kate approaching him, with her arrow out.
"I wont attack you if you don't attack me." Kate said, her bow still pointing at his chest. Michael withdrew his sword from its sheath and pointed it at her.
"Then why are you pointing your bow at me?" Michael inquired, in a sarcastically flirtatious tone of voice.
"Well how do I know you're not going to agree to my truce?" Kate asked, and Michael nodded in understanding.
"I agree. I won't attack you if you don't attack me." Michael said, and slowly, they both lowered their weapons. They stared into each others eyes for a few seconds before Kate ran up to Michael and hugged him harder than she had ever hugged anyone before. She let the tears escape and she told Michael everything. She told him about Ruby, Lily, John and herself. He told her about Max, and TK and Ricky and they comforted each other through everything.
They were now lying side by side on the border, directly next to the snow, talking about the games and their lives.
"Kate, Timtam has gotten out of control." Michael said again, and Kate expected him to tell her another story about something inhumane he did. "It's not just like Lily, he didn't just kill someone. He killed someone, tortured someone to death and tortures anyone in his alliance. We need to take him down." Michael told Kate, and she nodded, entranced by his eyes.
"So are you saying you and Yash and plotting a rebellion?" She asked quietly, and Michael nodded. Kate nodded, and looked him deep in the eyes. "I'm in." She said, then grabbed the back of his head and pulled him into a long awaited kiss.
