Kate was awoken with a soft shove. Her eyes snapped open and she jumped into action. She threw her fist up and it colliding with something hard, she then scrambled to her feet and grabbed her sword from the dirt besides her makeshift camp. Her eyes met those of her attacker, who only turned out to be Michael, who was now clutching his face in pain.
"Oh god," Kate said with a laugh, approaching Michael with more care. "Sorry, I thought you were attacking me." Kate explained her outburst of self defense.
"Why would I be attacking you?" Michael demanded angrily. Kate rolled her eyes, knowing Michael was getting angry, and that she'd have to make up for it.
"How was I supposed to know it was you?" Kate asked, holding Michael's face and evaluating the affected area.
"Well if it was anyone else they would have killed you in your sleep instead of carefully woken you up." Michael said, making Kate feel slightly stupid and guilty, but she got over it. She spent the next half hour tending to Michael's face and eating the small breakfast he had managed to prepare her.
The sun was only just rising, as Michael was only just able to escape Timtam at night to see Kate. Timtam had been less frustrating these days. He had been sitting in his throne, muttering to himself and occasionally bursting out in hysteric laughter, only to fall back into an ominous silence instantly.
It was more scary than it was convenient. Michael knew that Timtam had long gone crazy, but what the hell was going on with him now? Was he plotting something? Or did his thoughts no longer have any sense to them? At this point in time, Michael pushed the worries from his mind to enjoy some time with Kate.
They spent the day nestled together under a tree, sitting besides a small pond. It was a gorgeous setting. The sunlight bouncing off the reflection of the water and the trees making masterful silhouettes on the ground. They exchanged stories, thoughts and kisses for an hour or two before Michael realized he should probably return to Timtam before he realizes he is gone.
So Michael got to his feet and Kate accompanied him to the the of the forest. They tenderly wrapped his arms around Kate's shoulders, but Kate was gripping him with practically all her strength. This was no ordinary parting off ways. Not many people realized it, but Kate knew every single time she said goodbye to Michael, she might never see him again. So she took advantage of the goodbye.
They let each other go and stared into each other's eyes for a minutes before a loud noise ripped through their loving silence.
"Kate?" Timtam's voice echoed through the field. Timtam was standing halfway between the cornucopia and the edge of the forest, squinting his eyes at Michael and Kate.
Michael reacted by raising his leg to kick Kate to the ground. She was flung into a nearby tree, and wordlessly, they both understood the act they were playing. They would pretend to be attacking each other to appease Timtam. Kate scrambled to her feet, picking up her sword as she did, and then swiftly began running into the depths of the forest, away from her lover and her enemy. She heard bullets whistle past her ear, and luckily she was hit.
Once Kate had travelled a safe distance away from the cornucopia she collapsed next to a rock and lay there thinking about her current predicament. Her thoughts were mostly focused on John and Michael. She felt terrible for not running wildly with John, but she knew she was safe, and was almost certain John was not. She had a gut feeling that John wasn't doing well, but she knew he was alive which in a sense kept her alive.
And she was worried about Michael too. He was in a very fragile situation with Timtam. If they managed to defeat Timtam, they would have practically won the games, but one wrong move and Michael would be dead, and Yash probably would be too, and Kate didn't know how she would deal with that.
Her thoughts were torn from her head when she heard a twig break beneath a foot and a loud sob ripped from someones throat. Kate jumped to her feet, clutching her sword carefully in her hand. She crept towards the source of the sound, which was still making sounds of crying.
Kate emerged around a tree and came face to face with Amelia. Amelia stopped crying and faced Kate. She opened her arms and ran towards Kate, expecting a hug. Instead, Kate raised her foot and kicked Amelia in the chest, sending her straight into the ground, truly surprising Amelia.
"Give me one reason I shouldn't kill you." Kate asked intimidatingly, however on the inside she knew she wouldn't kill Amelia either way, this was only really to strike fear into her heart so she wouldn't betray Kate. Amelia looked up at Kate and continued sobbing.
"I dont - I dont know what to do." Amelia began. "Kriti died, and then I woke up and Amy wasn't there and - and I dont know what happened to her. She might have died, she have been kidnapped or she might have ditched me because I suck at life." Amelia continued. And Kate was looking down at her with pity. Amelia opened her mouth to continue, but before she could Kate lowered her sword and outstretched her hand.
With some hesitation, Amelia took it and got to her feet. They spent the next hour discussing all that had happened over the past four weeks and what they thought everyone in the games were up to. And most importantly, they discussed how they would get revenge on Timtam.
