Chapter 22
"Oh fuck..." I curse while Cameron's grip loosens on my palm.
He's as nervous as me. "Just try and be nicer from now..." He mutters.
We turn around dramatically slower and I see his mom dressed in a red strapless dress with matching high heels. She looked much younger than her age. I was speechless for a minute, simply staring at her.
She cocked an eyebrow at me, an evil smirk playing on her lips. "Uh...I...I-" I fumble, unable to cook up anything.
"Mom, she meant invested! She meant you must've invested so much time in decorating." Cameron interjected explaining on behalf of my awkwardness.
"Yes, of course. Everything is so nice in here!" I add, my voice unbelievably high.
Her eyebrow settles and she moves towards us. "Okay, I'll believe you." She tells stopping to look me up and down.
There was a hint of a condescending look behind her casual facade. I could see it in her eyes. "Merry Christmas." She utters pushing the words out of her mouth.
"Merry Christmas to you too...Ma'am." She scared me so much that the title escaped my mouth without even noticing it. She moves past us and walks towards the dining table.
I stand there watching her catwalk her way to one of the chairs. Cameron whispers to me, "Merry Christmas, Ally. Sorry I forgot to wish you, I was so into planning this meeting..."
I turn to him giving him a sad smile, "Yeah, yeah...Merry Christmas."
He notices my fear. "Relax, she's not going to eat you."
"Yeah? I don't think so... " I whisper back, my eyes carefully scanning her movements. She's going through her phone.
"Come on, just be nice to her and you'll be fine." He squeezes my hand reassuringly.
His mom flips her neck at us, "Sit down, what are you two doing there?"
We immediately take a seat opposite of her.
"Mom, where's dad?"
"Oh yeah, he's coming in a few minutes." She informs setting her phone down. She turns her attention to me, "So, Ally you're in what college again?" She asks, indicating she doesn't give two shits about my answer since she's judging me anyway.
"USC."
"Mom, she's a straight As student. Come on tell her, " He nudges me and I shift uncomfortably.
I glance back and forth from the mahogany table to his mom."Yeah...Well I try,"
"Hmm, impressive. So what do want to become?" She asks and I succumb. This was the question I could never answer.
"Um... I don't know..." I drag and her mouth shuts into a straight line.
She shakes her head towards Cameron. "Look, Cameron.... This is why I tell you your grades can't do anything if you don't know what you want to be."
My eyes immediately dart to the white plate in front of me. I felt so small and embarrassed I only wished to stab the bitch with the fork.
"She's a majoring in business. You know that has a lot of scope." He tries to cover up the wounds of her devastating blow. She gives him a slight nod.
"Business? Really? Well, honey...Look at me," She coos and I almost get tricked that she was being nice to me so I lift my head up. She has her head rested on one of her palms. I see her eyes turning sour, "To be a businesswoman you got have some sense of fashion like me." She taunts.
