Chapter 28

There was pin-drop silence after Kai's confession that he was going to break up with Sophia. We stared at him and then at each other wondering what would be an appropriate response at this time.

Xander, who had known him the longest and the best, proudly put an arm around his neck. "I'm so happy, bro! Finally you are free!" He cheered.

Kai's lips stretched into a lazy smile that made all of us loosen up. "Yeah, I always disliked her." Ava revealed. Unsurprisingly, we all did dislike her including Kai. But we never discussed it considering he'd feel bad.

"This deserves a celebration! Fully sponsored by our one and only... Kai!" Grayson howled.

"Yeah. We want a break up party!" Ava said and I agreed. Sophia, was like an anchor to Kai, always pulling him down.

For a second, I wondered about the similarities between Sophia and Cameron. Immediately, I shook off the terrifying thought. Sophia could never be like Cameron. But was that true the other way round?

After that night, Kai broke up with Sophia. I heard the news not from Kai himself but through my reliable source and Sophia's best friend, Cameron. He called me up at work next day.

Since he never called me during work, I expected something very urgent. But, it was exactly the opposite.

"Hello?" I had said pressing the phone in between my shoulder and ear as I juggled the trays of coffee.

"Hello, Ally? Do you know that Kai broke up with Sophia?" He charged through the speaker.

"He did?" I pretended, innocently.

"Yeah! Oh my god, she's devastated..."

"Sure. Listen, I would talk to you but I'm working... "

"Oh yeah, I'm sorry. I forgot. Anyway, could you talk to Kai about this?"

"Miller, I don't want to interfere in his life." I stated flatly.

"Well, think about it. I'll talk to you later then."

I hung up the phone, sighed and got back to work. Kai had made it very clear that he was happy with his decision. I was in no position to question it. And frankly, with their break up, at least she wouldn't hangout with me.

The next week I was going to meet Cameron for dinner at a restaurant near UCLA. I had to quickly finish up at my job and also do my homework before eight. Somehow, I managed and dressed up to meet him.

I took a taxi outside my college and embraced myself for the long 30 minute ride. Since, it was Saturday, traffic would add another 15 minutes.

I loved to see the scenery of the skyline of Los Angeles at night but I hated the long lines of traffic. While I was getting frustrated of the never ending traffic, my phone started ringing.

I looked to see my mom calling. She usually called me on weekends.

"Hey, Ally. How are you doing?" She asked. Her voice sounded so soft on the phone but only the person who was sitting in front of her could know the actual volume of her tone. I had spent many hours ignoring her loud voice of talking on the phone which was audible up to my room.

"I'm great. How are you?"

"Good. How's the weather back there? Cold?"

"Yeah. Past few days it's been unusually chilly."
