Chapter 11
Everyone had already left about a half-hour ago and we were the last ones. It was getting late for Lauren so Emily wanted to get home but Zack and I didn’t want to leave yet. But they were our ride home so we kind of have to leave now.
“What if you guys go on and go home Mom will let me borrow her car since mine has to be replaced.” Zack said.
“Ok whatever. Just don’t come in too loud and Court when you guys get back we need to talk ok?” I nodded and Emily continued. “Ok we’ll see you guys shortly. Love ya. And Zack drive safe please.”
“Yea we don’t need to replace Moms car too bro.” Chace chimed in.
“Shut up you too it’ll be fine. We won’t stay too much longer. See ya soon.” Zack said and waved them off. I smiled and waved to them as they got in the car and drove home.
“Ok now that there finally gone I want to talk to you before we go home. This was the only way that I’d be able to talk to you alone without Emily butting in.” Zack said. I laughed and pulled him over to the lounge chairs in the backyard. I gestured for him to continue and ask what was on his mind.
“Ok well you were crying earlier when you were singing that song and I was wondering why.” He said.
I sighed and explained. “About eight months ago my best friend Maggie ki… committed suicide. She was like a sister to me and I didn’t know that anything was wrong. Yeah she went through some ups and downs but we all do. All of a sudden I’m getting a call from her Mom telling me that she had found her dead.”
“I’m so sorry sweetheart. Why did you sing that song then?” he asked, curious.
“Because I told Emily she could pick out the song and she didn’t tell me what song until right before I sang.” I said with tears starting to fall from eyes.
He pulled me onto his lap and started rubbing soothing circles on my back. I couldn’t hold back the sob that was in my throat any longer. “I should have been there. I should have known something was wrong.” I cried into his chest.
“Courtney you had no idea. You couldn’t have done anything. It’s not your fault. Not at all.” He whispered reassuring words.
“But it is my fault. I didn’t see that she was depressed. I should have known.”
He kept speaking reassuring words into my ear until my sobs started to slow. I wiped the last of the tears from my eyes and looked at him.
“Thanks for being here for me. You’re the only one that knows.” I said and my voice cracked.
“Of course I’m here for you. I always will be. Don’t doubt that. Ever.” He said and then grabbed the back of my neck and kissed me.
“Ahem.”
“Why does someone always have to interrupt.” Zack groaned.
“Because I’m your father and I can.” I heard Tyler say.
“Sorry Dad. What did you need?”
“Your Mom and I are heading to bed so you guys should start heading back to Emily’s house. Your Moms car keys are on the table. Please be careful.” He said to Zack and then turned around and walked into the house.
