Chapter 21

As we walked into the room I took in my surroundings. It looked exactly like my Grandfathers room when he was in the hospital. Zack pulled up another chair next to his Grandfather and sat down. I stood next to the chair for a second just looking at his Grandpa. I had never met him before but I am glad I get to meet him now.

“Grandpa?” Zack asked to see if he was awake.

His hand moved and I took that as a response to Zack speaking.

“How are you doing?” Zack asked. He was whispering trying not to be too loud in a quiet environment.

“I am doing alright son. Who is this young lady?” his Grandfather asked.

I looked at his face and smiled a small smile.

Zack took my hand and then said, “This is my girlfriend Courtney. She is amazing Grandpa.”

“Hi” I whispered not sure what else I should say.

“She is quite the looker you got their son.” He said, “How are you doing young lady?”

“I am doing alright. I’m glad I get to finally meet you. I have heard a lot about you.” I remember one day Zack talking about his Grandpa and he had a huge smile on his face the whole time.

“Well I am glad that he has memories of me to share with you.” His Grandpa said.

I didn’t know what to say to his Grandpa but I squeezed Zack’s hand to remind him that I was here.

“Well Grandpa I am sorry I can’t be here for long but Dad wants to talk to you.” Zack told his Grandpa.

I could tell that another reason he couldn’t stay was because he couldn’t show how he really felt to his Grandfather.

“Son I love you. And Courtney take care of him. I can tell you two will be together forever.”

“I will. Again I am glad I got to meet you. I hope to see you soon.” I replied not knowing what else to say.

“I love you Grandpa. I’ll see you in a little bit.” Zack said before we got up and walked out of the room.

We were still holding hands as we walked to the waiting room but when we got there Zack didn’t stop. He kept walking ignoring what Chace was saying to him and walked to the open elevator doors. We went back downstairs and walked outside to the same bench we were sitting at before.

He sat there for a moment staring off into space before he turned and looked me in the eye. I could see the pain in his eyes and I could tell he was holding back tears.

“You don’t have to be strong Zack. I am here for you.” I said, “I love you.”

He didn’t respond to me instead he leaned into my shoulder and I could feel him start to cry. I could tell this was hard for him. Not just to see his Grandfather lying in a hospital bed but to open up like this to me. He had just told me I didn’t need to be strong that he was going to be my rock but this time I had to be his. He needed me just like I needed him two years ago but didn’t know it then.

“It will be ok.” I whispered in his ear. “I am here.”

A few minutes later I could feel him starting to calm down. I didn’t say anything to him, I just let him relax. I knew what he was going through. I knew how painful it is to see someone you love in a hospital.
