"I'm afraid that the boss is out of town. Would it be alright for you to come tomorrow?" the man asked me.
I nodded my head. "Can I get your name?" I asked.
"Of course, it's Samuel and," He pulled out a shiny silver card from his jacket pocket." here's my card."
I took it. "Thank you Samuel, but I don't have a phone."
"Do you have money?" he asked.
"A few dollars."
"Well here," He gave me three twenty dollar bills and a bunch of dollar bills.
"If you need anything, just call me."
"Wait!" I said as he was walking away.
Samuel stopped and looked at me. "Yes?"
"Where can I stay?" I asked him, since I have no where to go.
"Well," he said looking down. "You can stay at my place for tonight and maybe a few days, but you're going to have to find your own place," he said.
"Alright, thank you so much," I said.
I saw him smile and motioned me to follow him. He led me to a shiny black Mercedes. Wow. This dude must be rich.
Samuel opened the door for me. "Wait, what about Malena?" I asked.
He looked down at her and sighed. "Forgive me, but I don't have a car seat for her. You can sit with her in the back if you want."
I nodded. "That'll be fine."
He opened the back door and I smiled at him. I buckled Malena in the middle and I beside her.
"Sorry if it's not so comfy," Samuel apologized as he got in his seat.
"It's alright. This is actually more comfy than the ground I laid down in for two months." I laughed but he didn't find it funny.
"Why were in the woods alone with your daughter?" he asked after a quiet time.
"Well, my old pack- I mean by family didn't really like me, so I ran away."
"You have no money, how did you survive?"
"I snuck a hundred dollars in."
"Did you ever try to find a job?"
"Well, what person wants to hire a broken person like me?"
"Broken?"
"Yes, broken. My family beat me. My parents left me and I have a baby."
Samuel didn't talk after that. He stayed quiet for a while.
"How old are you?" he asked me.
I looked up to see that we stopped at a red light. "I'm seventeen."
I heard him gasp but he didn't say anything. He must think I'm...I don't know, something bad.
"We're here," I heard and saw a beige colored house. It was pretty big with a visible pool in the backyard. There was a greenhouse to the side of the house.
"You have a nice house," I commented.
"Thank you, big enough for my family," he said.
"You have a family? Huh. I didn't know that."
"Yeah, Two sons and a newborn daughter."
"Aw, you're wife still with you?"
With that he stopped the car abruptly. Oh no. I must've hit a nerve.
"Please don't talk about my wife," Samuel said warningly.
"Y-Yes, a-alright," I stuttered.
I got out of the car, holding onto Malena tightly. As Samuel opened the front door, two little boys ran from out the house and to him.
"Hey, guys! How are y'all today?" Samuel asked them.
"We're good, daddy. Liam threw Nanny Adeline in the trash can!" one of the boys said.
Samuel gave the boy Liam a fake mean look. "Now, Liam, what did I tell you about doing that to Nanny Adeline?" He asked him.
"Sorry, daddy," the young boy said.
Samuel smiled and grabbed the boy and flung him in the air. He caught him and did the same to the other boy. Samuel turned back to me and smiled.
"Boys, this is Tavern and her daughter Malena. They are going to be staying with us for a while so be nice to them, okay?" he asked the boys.
The two boys nodded and headed back inside. I heard a woman screaming and heels tapping. I saw a woman with jet black hair and plaid come out of the house, mad.
"That's it, Sam! I'm not taking care of them anymore," she said to him.
I saw him hold back a smile and nod his head. The woman went to her car and left the house. I smiled myself at the scene.
"Well, isn't that good for an introduction?" he asked, with humor.
"All I have to say is that you have lovely boys," I said.
"Lovely? They're too hyper! I'm serious! They never sit still!"
"I believe you. Are they twins?"
"Yeah, except Aaron is older. Now, let's go inside and out of the chill."
I smiled and followed him inside. The first thing I noticed was shelves and shelves of books. Wow. I can't wait to start reading.
"This is my home. Not much, but it's home," Samuel said to me.
"It's beautiful....." I whispered.
"Thank you. It's your home too, you know."
I smiled. I had a home.
"Come one, let's go see my daughter," He said to me.
I nodded and followed him up the stairs.
