(Sophie)
“Sophie Burns?” I heard Mrs. Folks loud voice shout from the front of the large AP U.S. History classroom. Her cold ocean eyes did not even leave her list while she said the words.
“Present.” I yelled to be sure she could hear me. So Mrs. Folks, well all we really knew about her is the very sad story about how she lost her husband during a shooting in a parking lot two years ago and is now taking care of her two younger children with only one working ear left. It’s really sad though. The way she lost almost everything that day.. Must still hurt.
She proceeded on with the list and I shot off to my imaginary world. I usually day dreamed during this class because even though it is an advanced placement class, I know every single detail I needed to know about U.S. History. When you have parents like mine, who come home with stories for you every day, you tend to have the general knowledge you need to pass the exams safely without ever going to class. Attending was a mere attempt to be inconspicuous.
“Hey… Huston you there?” I heard the high-pitched voice of my best friend Katy call from behind me. Today’s lesson must be really boring if she wants to make conversation during her favorite class of the day. She is a history junkies who spend half of their weekends reading about World War II and the other half discussing it with my parents.
“Nop, what is it? You bored with the conspiracy theories of today?”
“As a matter of fact yes! Your mom is a much better opponent when it comes to debating about history. I still don’t know how she knows so much. I’m guessing she just has a lot of free time. Or maybe she is like a spy or something and they haven’t told you about it. Or maybe you know and don’t want to tell me. Or cant.” The worst and the best thing of having history junkies as your best friends is that surprisingly they know a lot about their field, the worst thing of having Katherine Wills as a best friend is that without knowing her assumptions are always right, since we were little kids. I didn’t panic because I was used to these comments from her and it seemed like she had trailed off into her imaginary world of spies and villains.
“Yup I think the last one is the one,” I answered acting uninterested knowing she wasn’t paying attention anymore. I knew she didn’t suspect but even a hint of hesitation from my part would have been fatal. As soon as she heard my answer she drifted back into her own state of comma where I’m guessing she goes back to her World War II and Cold War play backs looking for something to debate with the Mrs. Folks about.
Usually school days are boring unless it’s Thursdays when we get to do science labs or Jeopardy games at school. I’m usually part of some of them and of course always win. I’m actually kind of smart and I guess I owe it to my parents because I’ve never been one to pay close attention at school teachers or classes but still get to score A’s on every test and homework I’ve ever handed- in. I really don’t know how I do it though. It’s like I have a picture memory and my brain works double the normal speed. My parents tell me to keep a low profile at school because of their job, but I still get to score a few jeopardy games a year.
This is what I am good at. During those jeopardy games I get to shine and feel confident about myself and I have grown to love that feeling. Someday I hope to become a diplomat or politician and fix the problems of the world. This is what I love to do and one of the only things I am allowed to do. Because of my parents job I have been deprived of being part of any sports team, not that I wanted to be a part of any of them, but I would have like to have that option. The only liberties I had was in academics. I was on track to be Valedictorian unopposed next year. I hope my parents agree with that.
