I wake with gasping breaths, clawing at my neck as if the action would snatch away the horrors of the nightmare that felt so real. Pulling the tank top, drenched in sweat over my head, I climb out of bed and hop into the shower.
When I reached the kitchen, I noticed that my parents had gone out earlier than me. Picking up the note on the table, I quickly scan over it:
We've gone to the markets to buy some more herbs. Be back in the afternoon.
Mom & Dad
I smile at my parent's obsession with herbs as I head out, not bothering to put my hair up as I place my baseball cap on. I'm surprised to find Caleb leaning against his car door right outside my house and I stand there like an idiot in shock.
"Mrs Coalman will have my head if I'm late to her Biology class, come on." Caleb urges me forward by opening the passenger door.
Feeling sorry for Caleb that he has Mrs Coalman for both Chemistry and Biology, I lurch forward and jump in, a wide smile spreading on my face as he closes the door for me and hops into the driver's seat, speeding forward.
We were in school in five minutes.
"Do you always drive like that?" I ask as Caleb opens the door for me.
He had definitely gone over the speed limit.
"No, I just wanted to impress you with my driving abilities." He shamelessly admits.
I look down at my feet as my face heats up but Caleb catches my chin with his forefinger and lifts my face to meet his gaze.
"I like looking at your eyes." He murmurs.
Suddenly, I'm aware of the growing number of stares of curios students in the packed parking lot.
Noticing my sudden discomfort, Caleb backs up with a smirk.
"Catch you later, Cass." He winks before turning to leave.
Attempting to cover my eyes with my cap, I rush to my French class not wanting to receive a detention for being late.
...
Chemistry was before lunch, so when the bell rang I almost raced to the cafeteria. Seeing Caleb already sat with his friends having lunch, I all but beg the line to hasten as my fingers bend dangerously close to breaking around the tray.
Caleb beams at me when he sees me approaching and moves his backpack from the empty space on the bench to let me sit.
"We were just talking about this Blood Moon rumour." He says.
"Apparently the Alpha's come psychotic Were who kills for entertainment." Samantha shudders.
"Some Alphas want to do something about his pattern of erratic behaviour but the Ancient Council sees nothing but a very powerful Alpha." Caleb continues.
"So that's how they explain three packs being taken over by the Mad Alpha?" Daisy snorts on a shake of her head.
I'd heard stories of the Mad Alpha; a ruthless killer, never batting an eyelash whenever he ripped someone's throat out for looking at him the wrong way.
"What is he looking for?" I find myself inputting in the conversation.
"Nobody seems to know; everyone is still freaking out over the fact that he killed all his family along with his former pack ages ago." Caleb widens his eyes.
A shiver runs through me as I hope that I never have to face somebody like that in my life. The table suddenly goes silent and I notice that all of Caleb's friends have their eyes on him. I turn to look and notice his eyes are brightened, just like they were on the full moon.
