Samia POV*
I hesitantly looked up at Cain. What if this was some kind of trap? What if he was pretending to care for me this whole time, just so that when I let my guard down, he attacks and shows his true un-seelie colors?
Then again, look at that face. He was practically pouting with his bottom lip sticking out slightly and his puppy dog eyes, who could say no to that? He looked sincere... enough.
I'm not usually this spontaneous and the gods know I've always wanted to step foot in the forbidden realm of the humans...
He stood before me, patiently waiting for me to grab ahold of his outstretched hand. I'm sure a dozen different emotions were flitting across my face as I internally weighed the pros and cons..
Ah what the hell?
I placed my hand and my trust in his palm as he gave me a wicked grin in return.
"Here goes nothing..." I whispered to myself.
Hands melded together we stood beside each other and stepped through the smokey portal. At first it felt like I had stepped through a freezing bottomless pit. I couldn't help but let out a startled cry as I began free falling into a vortex. My hair whipped around me as my stomach started to churn. Oh goddess, I think i'm going to barf... on Cain... So not cute for a second date.
After what felt like decades later, we began dropping dangerously closer to what looked like water below our feet. Just as I would've belly flopped on the surface, Cain held me to him and shot us up in the night sky. I hadn't even realized his wings were out.
I gripped Cain's neck as we soared through the unfamiliar air. It felt odd breathing here at first, but I was slowly getting accustomed to it. I can feel my powers wane a bit considering we were so far from Avalon but I could still feel them there. As if they were in a room locked away rather than out in the open for easier access.
We landed in a dark alley of a noisy town.
"Where are we?" I asked, peeking over his shoulder on tippy toe.
"We are in a place called New Orleans."
"New Aw...lins?"
He chuckled at my attempt to mimic the foreign words, "Close enough."
He grasped my hand and began steering us into the busy street. I felt like a child in awe as I took in my surroundings. The music was blaring and the lights... were everywhere. The humans.. such strange creatures. Some were dressed like Cain and I... while others were dressed up as different characters. Some of the costumes were glittery and pretty, some were scary and outright horrendous... while others were barely there, practically underwear if you asked me.
Oh goddess that woman! What a vile little thing! She was shouting as she lowered her blouse, exposing her chest to the men up top a balcony! Does the Jezebel not have any self respect? The men rewarded her with shiny yellow beads which she put on with a triumphant smile plastered on her face.
I'm sure Cain must of noticed my outright gawking because he whispered in my ear as he closed my hanging jaw with a finger under my chin, "This festival is called, 'Mardi Gras' and this is normal for them. Do not make it so obvious that we are outsiders as it will put a target on our backs."
I cleared my thought and straightened my denim shorts. "Sorry..."
Just then, a whiff of the most enticing scent filled my nose and instantly made me hungry. My stomach let out a ferocious and very un-lady like growl. I gave it a small pat as I peered up at him with a sheepish look.
