Over three hours later of searching later, Kyungsoo was still nowhere to be found.
Chanyeol and Taemin were now helping Jongin, but even with three pairs of eyes looking all around for him, their luck was running dry and low.
The minutes were adding up and city was getting darker. Jongin was beside himself. He was a mess. He didn't know what to do or where to look next. He was lost and he knew he only had himself to blame.
9:00 p.m.
"I told you this would happen, you fucking coward," Taemin said as he paced back and forth in front of Jongin. "I told you would push him away if you didn't give your relationship a real chance, but no, no one listens to me. Well, this is what happens. This is what happens when no one listens to me." Jongin sighed and dropped his head back into his hands and rubbed his aching head.
"I think he gets it, Taemin," Chanyeol said in his defense. "I'm sure he's already beating himself up enough and you taunting him won't help us find Kyungsoo."
Before Taemin could get the chance to scowl or even roll his eyes in the slightest, Jongin lifted his head. "He's right," he whispered, his voice hoarse-sounding. "I blew it. I was so scared of love that I ended up pushing it away." Taemin and Chanyeol's eyes remained focused on Jongin as he raised his hands up to his face again. "I'm such a fucking idiot."
Taemin rolled his eyes and sighed. No matter how pissed he currently was at him, he couldn't stand to see him so upset. So, he walked over to where he was sitting and hugged him once he was sitting, Jongin feeling too weak and defeated to reject him.
"Calm down," he said as he gently rubbed circles on the younger's back, trying to sound comforting. "Everything will be fine. We're gonna find Kyungsoo. He's got to be around here somewhere."
"That's not even a guarantee," Jongin whined as he a pout grew on his lips. "This isn't the first time he's been out there alone. I'm sure he knows the city pretty well by now, better than we do anyway."
"So what? We'll still find him," Chanyeol said suddenly, causing both Jongin and Taemin to look at him. "It's barely been a day and tomorrow is brand new and we can spend all of it looking and asking around for him, alright? We'll even create flyers and all that shit if you want. Don't give up yet. I think knowing you gave up on him will only make things worse."
"You're right," Jongin replied after being silent for a moment. "That's the whole reason he left in the first place. I wasn't giving up on him then and I'm certainly not gonna do it now."
"Yeah, now that's the spirit!" Chanyeol said with a couple of claps. "I say we all reconvene in the morning. We could all use some rest after today."
Jongin nodded his head and sighed to himself one last time. "Do you want to stay here tonight, Tae? I think I have an air mattress in the closet."
"Oh, no, I don't do air mattresses," Taemin said, holding up one of his hands. "Those things hurt my back like all hell. I'll just sleep in bed with you. It's not like we've never had sleepovers before." He began making his way to the bedroom, leaving Chanyeol and Jongin in the living room.
"Or you can do that," Jongin mumbled, earning a small chuckle from Chanyeol. "Thanks for your help. I'm sorry I got you into the mess."
"Don't sweat it," Chanyeool replied, patting Jongin's shoulder briefly. "I know how happy Kyungsoo makes you and despite how much I joke around with you, I do actually want you to be happy." Jongin just smiled. "We'll find him, dude. We'll bring him home."
"I hope so." Jongin let out a long exhale.
He said goodnight to Chanyeol and then went back to his bedroom, where Taemin had already made himself at home under his blankets. He went over to the other side of the bed and sat down, rubbing his face a few times and feeling his eyes sting.
He was happy to have people who were willing to help him, but he wondered if it would all be worth it in the end? What if they never found Kyungsoo? What if Jongin had really just lost his one chance at true, genuine happiness?
*********
9:59 p.m.
That was the time on the big clock tower in the city square. Kyungsooo quickly moved into a dark alley and hid where he thought no one could see him. Kyungsoo glanced down at his body and saw the pile of Jongin's clothes underneath him, the sight making the sadness inside him grow. He didn't even bring his scarf with him.
He looked up and glanced around at his surroundings, shivering when a cold breeze passed by him. He was cold and he wanted warmth, but not just any warmth--Jongin's warmth. So, after spinning around in circles a few times and bunching up his clothes with his paws, Kyungsoo curled into a tight, little ball and laid down on top of the soft fabric, taking in as much of the sweet scent of Jongin as he could.
12:04 a.m.
Kyungsoo found it hard to sleep on the ground after not having to for so long, so when he heard a random sound, he was instantly woken up. It was hard for him to see as a darkened and shadowy figure approached him. But once he sat up a bit taller and blinked his eyes a few times, he could clearly identify what it was.
It was the bad man.
His feet came to a stop in front of Kyungsoo, who shrunk back down into Jongin's clothes when he looked at him with those dangerous, sinister eyes Kyungsoo hated so much.
"Well, well, well," the man's deep voice said, sending a tremble of fear through the petite puppy's body. "If it isn't the little escape artist. I haven't seen you in a long time, little guy."
If Kyungsoo could have said something then, he would have told the bad man to go away, but he was just a puppy; a puppy who couldn't defend himself against the bad man.
"What do you say we go visit your old friends back at the pound, huh?" he continued, taking the stick with the bent and plastic-covered wire loop on the end out from behind him and putting it around Kyungsoo's neck tightly. As much as he tried, Kyungsoo's body strength didn't stand a chance against the bad man, which ultimately resulted in him being dragged away to the bad man's truck.
"Let's go, you mutt," the man said, practically throwing Kyungsoo into one of the compact cages in the back of his truck. Then, with a loud slam, he shut the cage door and locked it tight, jiggling it afterward to make sure it was on securely. "You aren't getting out this time," he said darkly, causing Kyungsoo to scurry into the corner of the cage in fear. The bad man snickered before stepping back and closing the back doors of the truck, waltzing around to the driver's side, getting in, and starting it up.
Kyungsoo so badly wanted to cry out for help from anyone, from Jongin, from a stranger, he didn't care; he just wanted to be free again. But it was no use crying now, he thought. The doors were locked and there was no way anyone would be able to hear him.
