Madeline poked her head out slightly away from the tree she was hiding behind. The cheers, whoops and laughter coming from the other boys had gotten louder and louder. Madeline had been watching the Gladers for two years... as long as they had been here. She knew all of them by name and would creep around the glade day or night watching there where abouts. She was there for every time a new greenie would come up. She knew it all. But they didn't know her. She had no idea when she would introduce herself to the boys... or if she ever would. Being the only girl, bad things could happen. She still didn't know how the boys never caught her lurking around with her hood and scarf covering her nose and mouth. Maybe because they were just a pack of ignorant teenage boys. But Madeline knew that wasn't true. She knew these boys were smart, and different.
Snap. Madeline was suddenly caught off guard by the sound of a twig behind her. Her breath hitched in her throat as she turned around softly. she lowered the sound of her breaths so her potential threat couldn't hear her. She stealthily moved along the forest floor, trying to feel her way through the dark as she tried to see in the pitch black of the night. She had always been light on her feet and silent when she crept. probably it was because she was only 5ft. tall and maybe weighed about 98 lbs.
Crack. she heard the sound again this time closer and she stopped in her tracks. Silence. The only sound was the pure sound of nature. Madeline's heart beat rose. she wasn't sure why, if she did get caught by the boys, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. they were on her side! .... at least she hoped they were. Madeline felt her muscles begin to ache at being frozen in place for so long and her lungs burned as she held her breath. After what seemed like eternity, she heard what she was hoping to not hear.
The sound of running footsteps.
Madeline took off without thinking, blindly running deep into the forest, the darkness engulfing her entire body. She could hear the footsteps of her pursuer behind her and she ran faster. Suddenly, SMACK. She yelped out as her face came in contact with a sharp branch that sliced across her cheek. She felt the blood dripping but she just ran even harder. Her eyes began to adjust to the darkness around her and she dodged branches and bushes as she sprinted at full speed. She had no idea where she was going, but she wasn't going to get caught.
As she ran, her breath heavy and wheezed, she tripped over something thick. Colliding with the ground, her pursuer was on her instantly. Apparently he was a fantastic runner if he could keep up with her speed. He straddled her and held her wrists tightly. She tried not to scream, so that her mystery boy wouldn't notice she was female.
"WHO ARE YOU?!" the voice demanded, inches from her face. Madeline kept quiet. "I said, Who are you?" he yelled with increased volume. It took all Madeline had to not punch this idiot in the face. His grip on her wrists was extremely painful.
"Alright, Shank. Don't want to talk? I'll just bring you to the other boys. Let's go!" He stood up, grabbed a chunk of Madeline's shirt and yanked her off the forest floor. She wanted so badly to teach this guy to never mess with her again by hitting him so hard, he cried for his mom, but she stayed silent.
Before she knew it, she was being dragged out of the darkness, and out of the forest into the area where the boys were having their party. She looked around as she was being mercilessly dragged on the dirt. She saw boys staring at her and whispering to each other as the laughs and chatterings of the party died down at her uninvited entrance. She knew them all by name. There's Jeff talking to Clint. and there's Jack. She named them all silently in her head.
"What is this?" She heard a boy with strong accent ask the boy who was dragging her. That is definitely Newt. She said to herself. Newt was the only boy with a British accent in the Glade. Suddenly, she was dropped on the ground and her breath was knocked out of her as she made contact with the dirt floor. She rolled over to see the boy that was dragging her.
