Shrill shrieks and roars were still heard from the Grievers and Madeline didn't dare look behind her as everyone ran towards the exit."Wait!" Chuck yelled. "There's an 8 number code!" Madeline forced herself to turn her head which was less painful than she had expected.
She faintly saw a screen on the circular door through her impaired vision. Chuck was right. They needed a sequence to get in. Thomas gripped Madeline's body in his arms.
"Minho!"
"What?" The tall Asian boy yelled back, struggling to fight a persisting Griever.
"What's the sequence?!" Thomas shouted.
"What??"
"The sections to the maze! What's the sequence!" Minho paused and looked at Thomas, before his eyes brightened.
"I got it! It's seven! One! Five...!"
Madeline's nerves were shot. She had stopped crying by now and she just wanted to jump up and start getting in the fight. But instead, she laid lifeless in Thomas' arms. She was awake, but it was like she was dead and awake at the same time.
"Come on Minho!" Chuck yelled as he punched in each number into the screen. Minho struggled to keep the persisting Griever back and a few other boys including Newt, came to help.
"Uhhh.. six! Four!" Minho let out a cry and Madeline looked over to see the Griever had pinned him under its sluggish body. Madeline couldn't take it anymore. This process was going too slow. She kicked and tried to wiggle her way out of Thomas' arms, but he held onto her.
"Madeline?" He asked her. Pain shot through Madeline's body but she persisted. "Let me go.." She mumbled.
"No! What are you doing?"
"Let me go!" Madeline managed to yell and she pushed herself out of Thomas's arms. She stood up and the world swirled and she felt extremely dizzy. She ignored the feeling and picked up a stray spear on the ground. Before even thinking about it, she charged the Griever that was on top of Minho.
"Madeline!" Thomas called after her, but she ignored him completely. She wasn't going to let illness keep her from fighting her fight. She pushed Newt out of the way as she reached the Griever and he stumbled.
"What on earth are you..." The Griever screamed a high pitched shriek of pain as Madeline thrusted her spear straight into one of its eyes. Madeline pulled the spear out and the Griever reared back, roaring in fury.
It was the perfect time and Madeline grabbed onto Minho's arms, who was lying on the ground and she pulled him out from underneath the Griever. Minho stumbled up to his feet.
"He's gonna attack again! Finish the code!" Madeline yelled and threw her spear once again and it hit the Griever's sluggish body.
All the boys who weren't fighting the monstrous beasts stared at Madeline in shock. She went from totally unconscious to fighting a full on fight in about three seconds.
"Now!" Madeline yelled and Minho snapped out of his daze.
"Newt! Hold that one off!" Madeline pointed to the Griever she had damaged, which was coming at them, full speed. Newt nodded and ran towards the beast.
"Did you get six and four?!" Minho yelled and ran towards the screen.
"Yeah! Two more numbers!" Chuck had his finger ready to punch in the last two numbers of the code. Minho thought for about a second before speaking.
"Eight and three!" He yelled and Chuck immediately punched in the numbers. The screen turned green and the circular door in front of them opened immediately.
