"No!" Madeline screamed a long bloody scream of terror. She dropped to her knees and sobbed desperately."Noo!" She banged her fist on the wall. "Please no!" She knew nothing would work but she still persisted.
"Please not again..." She whispered in between sobs. As she cried bitterly, she suddenly felt a hand grab her arm.
"Maddie.." Madeline turned around and looked at Thomas sadly.
"I'm so sorry.." She cried. Thomas shook his head and grabbed her to embrace her tightly. At first, Madeline was too in shock to do anything, but then, she let out a cracked sob and wrapped her arms around his body tightly.
They sat there in each other's arms for what seemed like a few minutes until eventually Thomas pulled away. His deep brown eyes looked into hers which were the same color.
"Why?" He whispered. Madeline cocked her head slightly.
"What?" "Why didn't you leave me behind? Why did you try to get us both through?" Thomas' were red and he had dark bags under his eyes.
Honestly, he looked terrible.
Madeline wasn't sure how to answer his question because she didn't know why she tried to save him. All she knew was it was something deep in her heart telling her: "Save him, Madeline. You can't leave him behind."
"Because, you're my friend, and I couldn't leave a fellow Glader behind." Thomas' eyes widened.
"You saved my life." he whispered. All Madeline could do was smile awkwardly. Was it even worth it? She somehow felt better sitting next to Thomas but the tears kept coming anyway.
"We're gonna die." She looked up at the sky which was now completely dark and the Maze felt eerie and haunting.
"Wow. you're so optimistic right now." Thomas looked at her and tried to smile, but it faded quickly.
"I had a plan.." Madeline pressed the back of her head against the wall of the Maze. Thomas snapped his head over to her.
"What happened to it?"
"You broke your foot... by tripping." Madeline sighed.
"The floor is slippery..." Thomas murmured.
A low growl in the distance cut off their thoughts. Madeline felt her heart rate skyrocket. Her mind swirled trying to find a plan to get them both to safety before they became a Griever buffet. She stood up and took a look around.
"Maddie you've faced Grievers several times right?" Thomas looked at her hoping she would be able to fight these things off once they came for them. Madeline cleared her throat.
"Yes. Well, three times."
"...Wait. You've been through the Changing three times."
"Yes."
Madeline had her hands on her hips and she turned around to look at Thomas with a look that obviously said:
"So?" Thomas' eyes widened.
"So every time you've faced a Griever you've gotten stung?" Madeline wanted to reply with another "Yes" but she made her brain work and say something decent.
"Do your math." Was the result. Thomas sighed at her sarcasm.
"Well, it makes me feel so much better that you've gotten stung every freaking time you face one of these ugly monsters."
