"Hey!" Madeline called out, causing everyone attending the banishment of Thomas, to stop and turn around. She immediately caught eye contact with Gally who was staring at her in pure rage. She then forced herself to look at Thomas who was still lying on the ground, looking up at her with both confused and sad eyes. Blood dripped from a cut on his forehead and Madeline felt something inside of her that felt almost like... pity.

"What are you doing here?" Gally demanded, snapping Madeline back into reality.

"I'm not letting you do this." She said with a confidence in her voice she had never heard before. Thomas tried to speak but Gally cut him off.

"I told you not to get involved with this, Madeline."

"Did you really think I would listen?" Madeline tried to search the area around them for any weapons she could use if things got out of control. She spotted a wooden spear a few feet away from Thomas who was to her right. Gally scoffed.

"I thought you might get some sense in you for once and actually do what's right."

"What's right? Gally this isn't right!" Madeline didn't want to fight with him, she just wanted to stop him. Obviously, negotiation wasn't an answer. Madeline would have to fight her way through the situation no matter what. She straightened her back and eyed Gally with a haunting stare.

"Let him go." She said coldly. Gally paused for a few moments before replying.

"Why would I do that? Don't you see he's a traitor?" Madeline sighed.

"We already had this conversation." With that she lunged forward, grabbed the spear off the ground and returned, pointing it right at Gally's heart. It all happened so fast that the other boys weren't even able to react.

"Ah. This has happened twice already to me and you. We gotta quit having conversations that involve spears." Madeline flashed a faint smile.

"Now let him go, Gally." She gripped the spear and pushed it against Gally's chest. Anger was swelling in his eyes that scared Madeline slightly. He slapped the spear away.

"You're not in control here."

"Neither are you!" Madeline yelled. She noticed over in the corner of her eye that Thomas was starting to stand up. Gally turned to him but Madeline interfered by taking the side of the spear and slapping it against his face. Gally cried out and stumbled backwards. He growled slightly and reached for Madeline, but a strong hand grabbed her arm from behind.

She almost squealed in surprise, but she had no time to react when the person wrapped their arms around her waist and pulled her back. She turned to see that Thomas had hold of her.

"We have a plan." Was all he said before letting go and turning around to punch a guy straight in the nose. Newt appeared from behind another boy and knocked the legs right under one of Gally's followers. The boy cried out and fell to the ground. Madeline had no idea what was going on. This time, Newt came up to her and grabbed her wrist, leading her to stand behind Thomas who was slowing backing up.

"Gally, listen. We are leaving. We know how to get out of this maze and we are doing it today. We are going to finally get out of here. We gotta leave before the Grievers decide to come back." Thomas was always one to try to soothe problems calmly. Most of the time. Gally's usual mocking laugh was gone and now he stared at Thomas with a look that seemed he could rip him in half.

"Boys, don't listen to him. He's just trying to scare you."

"No. I'm not trying to scare you. I'm trying to save you. We can get out of here. Be free. You all should come with us."

Madeline was so confused that she didn't even know how to react. Newt still had a strong grip on her wrist which she couldn't decide if it comforted her, or scared her. The other Gladers just stared at Thomas like he was crazy and the whole situation felt awkward to Madeline.

"Me, Minho, Newt and Madeline are leaving. Whoever wants to come with us can come. We are going to fight our way out of here. The only thing I can tell you is that we are going to get ourselves out of here, or die trying."  Thomas' voice was filled with determination.

At first, there was a creepy silence that lasted for what seemed like forever. But after a few moments, Jeff the MedJack stepped forward.

"Sorry Gally." Was all he said before joining Thomas. After that, almost every single boy from the Glade was on Thomas' side which made Madeline happy, even though she was still super confused at the entire situation. Only about five boys decided to stay behind and Madeline knew, they were all going to. Either the Grievers would come back, or Wicked would just decided to kill them.

"Wow." Was all Gally said as he put his hands on his hips. Madeline heard Thomas sigh.

"Gally, come with us."

"Yeah right. Good luck against the Grievers." With that Gally walked away and Thomas didn't even try to convince him. He turned around to the group in front of him and scanned each one of the boys.

"Let's go. I hope you're ready."

Madeline was in some weird daze as they ran through the maze as one big gigantic group. Minho and Thomas were leading, obviously because they were the runners. But, Madeline still felt slightly offended. She honestly knew the maze as well, maybe even better than they did. But Newt hadn't left her side and this comforted her as they ran at full speed. Just minutes before, Minho had thrown to Madeline a backpack of supplies, which she had no idea what it contained. As she ran, she turned to Newt.

"Why didn't anyone tell me there was a plan?" She asked between breaths.  Newt returned her look.

"Well. Tommy was the one that came up with the idea and we assumed you wouldn't want to here anything he had to say."

"You could have sent someone else to tell me the plan? Like yourself?"

"Honestly, we all agreed that you probably needed some time alone."

Madeline thought about Newt's comment. He was absolutely right. She needed those few hours alone to calm her mind, even though instead she just had some sick dream. But she did feel slightly better about the whole ideal.

"Well, you boys guessed correctly." As soon as she replied Minho announced that they were having a "break" and Madeline realized they had been running for a long time. She slid down the cold wall of the maze and Newt plopped down next to her.

"Do you feel any better?" He scared Madeline who was glancing at Thomas curiously and she jumped slightly.

"Ah well... I guess a little. It was a lot to take in." Newt nodded and pulled a water bottle out of his backpack.

"But you know, honestly that doesn't sound like the Tommy I know. To kill a person... that's so heartless." He drank his water and eyed Madeline cautiously.

"You believe Thomas has heart?" Madeline stared straight ahead.

"Of course I do. He's in love with you isn't he?" This caused Madeline to whip her head towards Newt and she gave him a look.

"What? How do you know about that?" She whispered harshly and Newt chuckled.

"Madds, Minho told me you and Tommy kissed. I wasn't surprised honestly. As soon as you showed up, he couldn't keep his bloody eyes off ya. And now we know, he even fancied you before the maze. I'm being serious when I say this... he loves you." Madeline sighed and pressed the back of her head into the wall.

"Define love."
