After a little more discussion, the boys eventually guided Madeline to the eating area to give her some specially made food from Frypan, the Glade's cook. It was cold that night so as she sat and ate a nice dinner, Minho got her a blanket to wrap around herself. The other boys ate too, trying to leave Madeline to herself and give her space. The only reason that was happening was because Newt threatened to all the Gladers that if any boy so much as raised a finger near her, they would be banished. A little harsh, but being the only girl, stuff could happen. So Newt was just being smart. As she ate by herself with her blanket, she felt the presence of someone watching her. She took her mug of water and brought it to her mouth before looking up and automatically catching eyes with Thomas who was sitting with Chuck and Minho. Madeline wanted to look away but she didn't. Their eyes locked and Madeline felt her cheeks heat. She wasn't sure why, she knew who Thomas was. He was the new greenie and he had only been here a few days. But that wasn't it. She knew more than he did. She had been through the Changing 3 times and she remembered things about Thomas that he could not remember. She convinced herself that this was why her cheeks were red and when he gave her a small, friendly smile, she faked one back and continued eating.
As she ate greedily, not realizing how hungry she was. She stopped and stared at her food.
"Alby." She said louder than she intended to and a few boys near her looked up from their meals. Madeline felt embarrassed that she got attention and cleared her throat, trying to act normal.
"He's been stung." Said Zart, One of the Track-Hoes, who had turned around in his seat to face her. Madeline dropped her fork. The whole place was silent.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?" Her voice came out angrier than she'd expected. She was surprising herself a lot today. Boys looked around at each other.
"Well... I'm not exactly sure." Zart looked at the ground. Madeline laughed.
"Did you guys forget? I have a freaking cure!" She heard a few boys say some things to each other.
How come they were talking to each other instead of her? As she watched them she caught eyes with Thomas again. She awkwardly looked away and growled, throwing her blanket off her. She stood up and began to walk out when Zart called after her.
"Where are you going?"
Madeline whipped around and stared at the dirt covered faces around her.
"I'm saving Alby's life."

Madeline reached where they were keeping Alby pretty quickly. Busting in the door, she immediately saw Newt and Gally standing over a body. Gally turned around at the sound of the door opening."Hey, you're not really allowed to be in-"
"Oh shut up." Again, Madeline surprised herself with her tone. What was going on with her? As she brushed past Gally she saw him exchange glances of surprise with Newt. They were just as shocked at her tone as she was. Alby looked dreadful. And haunting. Of course none of it scared Madeline because she had been stung herself. Alby's veins were abnormally large and an ugly color of green. He writhed and groaned, pulling at the straps that were connected to his wrists to keep him from attacking anybody.
"Tell me everything."
Apparently Madeline was now in charge.
Newt stood next to her and stared at Alby.
"He was stung yesterday. He went to retrace Ben's steps." Madeline clicked her tongue. "That poor kid you banished out in the Maze."
"He tried to kill Thomas." Gally said with a slight sound of annoyance in his voice.
