Chapter 23 - Black Hair and Blue eyes
[Recap: Thomas comes up the box and Wendy wakes up the same day he does before repeating the same words "Thomas is the key to everything" over and over again until she collapses. Newt puts her in bed and answers Thomas's questions as the bonfire continues]
—
When Wendy woke up, she was confused.
She remembered what happened last night: Newt hugging her like he actually could stand her, Minho staying away from her, and Thomas appearing in the glade. God, if you asked her, she thought she lost her mind because it seemed like everything had switched.
Instead of Newt staying away from her, Minho was. Instead of Minho hugging her, Newt was. Everything was flipped around and Wendy didn't know how she felt about it.
The other reason why Wendy was confused was because the sirens indicating that a new Greenie was coming up the box had sounded at 8 a.m. Thomas had already come up the box yesterday, which meant something was wrong.
She jumped out of bed and ran outside, ignoring the stares from Gladers as she jogged over to the box with no shoes on. As she ran, Wendy's hair flew behind her and her clothes stuck to her body, gladers stopping and gapping at her awake figure.
She was the first one to arrive at the box, and when she did, she grabbed the handles and lifted each side of the opening herself. She groaned as the soreness from her burning and knife wounds pained in her stomach and chest, but she ignored it and opened the box anyways.
Everyone stood behind Wendy as she gasped, her jaw dropping and her eyes widening at the sight below them. It was a girl, another one, with black hair like silk and crystal blue eyes like the ocean. Their gaze met each other's and a name slipped from both of their lips.
"Wendy?"
"Teresa?"
Wendy jumped down into the box and kneeled at her side, and another name escaped Teresa's mouth when she looked up at the boys.
"Thomas?" she whispered with confusion.
Wendy tucked a piece of her own hair behind her ear before trying to help Teresa up, but in a blink of an eye, her eyes rolled back into her head and her head hit the metal ground.
"Teresa? Teresa wake up—" Wendy panicked as she swiped hair out of her pale face. "Med Jacks!" Wendy called out with a raspy voice, and immediately Newt and Jeff jumped down. Wendy watched as they pulled her up, leaving Newt and her alone in the box to unload supplies and talk.
"Make sure she's okay." she told Jeff as he hosted the unconscious girl up. The way Wendy was feeling right now about Teresa, anxious and worried, was that how the Gladers felt when she wasn't awake? Maybe not—
Wendy's thoughts were cut short when Newt tapped her arm and passed her a crate, signaling that she needed to start helping. She grabbed it and tossed it above to another Glader, repeating the action several times.
After an awkward silence for around two minutes, Wendy finally spoke. "So, Newt," she cleared her throat, "you don't hate me anymore or what?"
Newt froze for a second, his hands clenching onto a crate before he sighed and shook his head at the brunette, "I never hated you, Wendy."
"You sure made it seem like you did." she grumbled back, and suddenly she felt a hand on her arm, forbidding her from picking up another box of items.
