Chapter 26 - Clicks and Whirrs

[Recap: Minho and Wendy kiss, the outcome being that they don't speak anymore because Wendy likes Newt and not him. Newt takes Wendy out for the day before she breaks the news to him that she is training with Ben in the maze the next day to become a runner.]

Ben had waken Wendy up early the next morning; he greeted her at her hammock before tossing her a sandwich, a backpack, a water bottle, and some running gear before the brunette could even open her eyes.

"The hell—"she groaned as the multiple items weighed her down heavily.

Ben clapped his hands by her ears and Wendy swatted them away. "Hey, get up shank. We've got running to do." he told her with a grin that seemed too cheerful at that hour. She wanted to smack it right off of him.

Wendy whined but got up nonetheless and scanned over the items. "Eat and meet me by the North Walls. Put the gear on over you head, strap the watch on your left wrist, and take out the map. You've got five minutes." he told her before taking off towards the doors. Wendy groaned again at his disappearing figure, feeling like shit from yesterday, but hey, at least she wasn't training with Minho.

She stood up and yawned, already having her jeans and black sweater on for the day. She fumbled through the items quickly, eyeing the harness that she needed to put on. She groaned again before throwing it on, and she heaved in a deep breath as it seemed to suffocate her chest.

"Of course these are only for boys." she grumbled, "Feel my damn boobs are gonna fall off, or worse, shrink." she said when she tightened the straps.

She quickly took the sandwich out of the bag and ate it on her way to the doors, throwing away the wrapper it was in along the way. After she wiped her mouth, she quickly threw her hair in a high ponytail and fastened it, wanting to get all of her hair out of her face for when she ran.

When she neared Ben, she saw another figure, a tall blonde whom she recognized easily.

"Newt, what're you doing up?" she questioned when he was in hearing distance. Wendy watched as his head snapped over to her and a wide smile spread across his face.

"What? Don't want me to send you off?" he smirked, "I do it with Minho every morning, but I figured you'd need a little bit more luck."

"My savor." she said sarcastically before nudging his shoulder, "I'm kidding. Thanks."

Ben cleared his throat, pulling the two out of their conversation. "Alright, we better get going, Wendy."

Newt nodded at him, crinkling his nose as Wendy stepped back. She sent him a smile before starting to head after Ben, but he stopped her, grabbing her wrist to hold her back.

He pulled her to him and dipped his head next to her ear, "Be safe alright?" he whispered, and Wendy smiled. "Get back in one piece, please." he said, his whisper so low that it seemed as if he didn't want Ben to hear his words. "I can't loose you too."

She quickly pulled him in for a brief hug because of his words, feeling actually cared for and worried for as she smelled the soap on his clothes as she dug her face into his shoulder. "I'll be fine."

She stepped back for certain this time and nodded at him before running off after Ben. When she caught up with him, he was already rounding the corner.

"We're exploring section two today." he hummed, taking the map from Wendy's pale hands. "Stay close, and here, take this knife. Every time we round a corner, slash vines on the left side of the wall to leave a trail."
