The One That Got Away

Sophie wakes up at 9:00 and makes herself breakfast. She turns on her laptop and shops online.

Rhett McLaughlin is calling

Sophie presses answer on the skype call.

Rhett smiles and Link looks down at his lap.

"Hey Rhett! Oh... He's here." Says Sophie.

"I need you guys to make up." Says Rhett.

"Why would I make up with her?" Asks Link annoyed.

"I don't want my two best friends hating each other! You guys loved each other! What happened?" Asks Rhett. "I'll leave you two alone to talk."

Rhett gets up and leaves the room.

"H-Hi Link." Says Sophie.

"Hi." Says Link back.

We're talking like complete strangers! Thinks Sophie.

"Listen... Sophie, I...I am truly sorry for what happened in New York. I just... I was pressured and I freaked out."

"It's okay... What happened, happened. But I can't go back to you... You cheated on me."

"I understand. I've never regretted something more than cheating on you. I can't live with myself with those memories anymore." Says Link. "But... Are we over each other and just friends again?"

No... I never stopped loving you. I'm not over you. I can't tell you because Rhett is my boyfriend and I love him to death too. Thinks Sophie.

"Y-Yeah." Says Sophie.

"Well, I'd better go..." says Link.

"Me too." Says Sophie.

Link walks out of the room and gets Rhett.

Rhett comes back in and sits in front of the computer.

"Did you guys make u-"

Sophie angrily turns off her laptop and slams it shut.

If happy-ever-afters did exist, I would still be holding you like this. All those fairy tales are full of it. One more stupid love song I'll be sick. Sings Sophie in her head.

"I would make you stay, so I don't have to say you were the one that got away!" Sophie sings out loud.

Sophie hears a knock at the door but checks the clock first

10:47 pm

She walks to the door and opens it, trying to hold back the obvious tears in her eyes. It's Rhett.

Rhett looks into Sophie's eyes with concern in his own.

"Hi R-Rhett." Says Sophie.

"Something wrong?" Asks Rhett closing the door.

"Nothing..." She sniffs. "I'm fine."

She walks to the couch and sits down on it, hugging her knees. Rhett sits down next to her.

"You're not fine. Tell me what's wrong."

"There's nothing wrong!"

"This isn't like you. Tell me." Says Rhett. "You were fine until you talked to Link earlier. What's wrong?"

Rhett pulls up Sophie's sleeve, revealing her cuts.

"I just want to die okay?!!" Yells Sophie crying.

"W-What?"

"I hate myself! I hate my life! I hate the memories! I hate who I've become!"

"Wait... Did Link say something to you?" Asks Rhett.

"N-No!" Sophie stutters.

"What did he say..."

Sh*t. I'm a horrible liar. Thinks Sophie.

"I just... I wish I'd never met him! I knew he was a mistake from the moment he walked in the door, 9th grade, in Mr Spiegel's class. Ugh!" Yells Sophie. "I should've known now that he would break my heart and leave me behind!"

Rhett puts his arm around her.

"I never want to make you feel this way." Says Rhett hugging her. "If something's wrong, tell me... I'm here."

Rhett lets go and looks down into her hazel eyes, tears running from them.

Sophie looks up into his blue-green eyes and sighs quietly.

She quickly presses her lips onto his. She locks hands with him and stops for a split second to breathe. She goes back in and this time stands up. Rhett does the same. Sophie stands on her toes to reach him. She walks him backwards as she walks forward and Rhett's back hits the wall. She puts her hands around his neck and then stops.

"I love you Sophie. Don't ever forget it beautiful." Says Rhett.

"I love you Rhett."

MEANWHILE...

Link gets out a guitar and starts to play it.

"Yeah I kno-o-ow that I let you down. Is it too late to say 'I'm Sorry' now?" Link sings while playing and writes down the lyrics.
