October

I tried to open my eyelids, but they felt sticky and I literally had to pry them open. It took my eyes a long time to adjust to the light in the room. It felt as if I'd been sleeping for years. My head felt like a rock, and my right thigh burned like fire. I had no idea why. Frank lay next to me with his back facing me.

"Frank?" I croaked.

He jumped and whirled around. "October? You're awake!" He brought his arms around me and pulled me close. "Holy shit, I was so worried! You have no idea..." He buried his face into my chest and I could hear him crying. With much effort and with shaking hands, I tried to lift his head from my chest. He was resisting, for some reason. "Frank, look at me," He shook his head, his shoulders heaving up and down.

"Frank, why won't you just look at me?" I couldn't make him, as I was too weak. He would actually have to do it willingly. I thought I saw something on his face and needed a better look for verification. Slowly, he lifted his head up and met my gaze. The sight of him brought tears to my eyes instantly. His right eye was swollen nearly shut, and his forehead was covered with lacerations and scrapes. His bottom lip was cracked wide open; both cheeks had several deep purple bruises overlapping each other. The effect made it look like one giant bruise on each cheek.

"Frank," I choked, gingerly rubbing my fingertips down his temple, "What happened?"

He shook his head sadly. "It was bad. Really bad."

"Tell me."

He began to recount everything that had happened, from my poisoning to his attack on Roger and Eddie and Mary's eventual recapture of us both. She'd drug him and I both back downstairs, he assumed, as he was unconscious, then taken Roger and Eddie both to the hospital. When she returned, she came down and bandaged up my leg all the while explaining to Frank that he was 'bad' and 'needed punished'. She'd had a gun and syringe with her, so he'd been unable to try anything again.

I gingerly touched my leg. "Damn, I got shot..."

He smiled faintly. "Try not to feel too cool. It barely grazed you."

"How long have I been out?"

"A long time. A long, long time."

He rolled back on his side and I thought I saw him wince in pain. "Are you... you hurt anywhere else?"

"Oh yeah. When Roger and Eddie got out of the hospital they had a fun time with me. I thought they'd kill me; I really did. In fact, I knew it. But they said they weren't finished with me yet, so they were allowing me to live. They made me want to die, though."

"Where are you hurt?"

"Everywhere. They beat my ass with metal pipes, October. I have lumps all over my head, and my body is covered with bruises. It hurts to even talk."

"Take off your shirt,"

"What? October, this is hardly the time to try to get a chance to see me naked."

"Shut up. Take it off."

He tugged the bottom hem up and little and sighed. "I can't. It hurts too much."

I sat up and nearly fell back over as a wave of dizziness hit me. I put my hand on the bed to steady myself, and then reached over for his shirt. I pulled it up over his head as gingerly as I could, but I still heard him hiss under his breath. What I saw was...unexplainable. Nearly every inch of him was covered in some type of injury. Some of his tattoos were barely even visible under the deep purple bruises.

"Frank...oh Frank..." Was all I could say. Tears streaked down my face as I leaned down and stroked his forehead. A few tears fell in his hair.

I put my hand lightly on the left side of his face and kissed his right temple. "I'm so sorry this happened to you."
