Frank
I wandered around the house, bored beyond words. "Hurry up and get home, October," I muttered to myself. She'd left me the keys to her car, which had made its way back home probably thanks to Dominic, but I had no idea where to go or what to do. The most time I'd spent in Illinois previous to this, was driving through it, so I didn't know where anything was.
I'd cleaned up what little had needed to be done around the house, spent some time on the phone with Gerard, and stared at the empty space where the TV used to be. Beyond this, I was going out of my mind.
I was just about to take another shower when I heard a car pull into the driveway. Oh, thank God, October was home. I hurried to the front door only to stop short. It wasn't October, but Dominic. Things had been going fine between us all, but it didn't mean I had to be happy to see him.
I stepped out on the front steps and nodded my head at him. "Hey."
"Hey," He said, climbing down from the truck and stumbling forward.
I frowned. The dude was obviously drunk, and it was like 3:30 in the afternoon. How cool. "October's not here."
"I know that," He slurred. "I wanted to talk to you."
"Where's Aiden?"
"At my mom's. He's staying the night there."
"If you needed a sitter, you could have brought him over here, you know."
Dominic shook his head quickly. "No, I didn't want him to hear this."
Sighing deeply, I crossed my arms and leaned back into the house. "What is it now, Dominic? I thought we'd gotten things worked out."
"I thought so, too." Dominic walked up until he stood about five feet away from me and stopped. "But I decided that I'm tired of pretending to be cool with this." He waved his arms around wildly.
"Can't you just leave well enough alone?" I asked, trying to suppress a yawn. Hearing this from him had gotten beyond old.
"Isn't it enough that you stole my wife from me? Now, I have to hear from my own son about how great you are? You want to take him from me too." His voice cracked and he looked away quickly.
"I'm not trying to steal him," I said softly, suddenly feeling sorry for him. "I just want him to like me."
Dominic looked back at me and flashed an evil glare. "I think we've gone well above and beyond that, my friend. You're all he talks about. He doesn't want to live with me anymore. He wants to live here with you."
"I thought that was the original plan, anyway. He's supposed to come here and live with us."
"With October, not you, are you going to stay here forever? Don't you have a home to go back to? Why don't you just go back to New Hampshire and leave them alone?"
"New Jersey," I whispered. "And yes, I'm going to go back, but I'm staying here until October gets through her therapy."
"Oh how very noble of you," He hissed bitterly.
"Listen, Dom," I sighed, taking several steps toward him. "I'm sorry that you can't accept the fact that I'm part of their lives now, but I'm going to be in them for as long as she'll have me. But I would never try to take your son from you. I know you're his dad. You always will be. I'm always just going to be Frank, and I'm perfectly happy with that."
"I just want you to go away!" He lunged forward and shoved me, catching me off-guard. I flew back into the cement steps, feeling my back crack as it landed across the step.
"Motherfucker," I growled, getting up slowly. "I am so fucking tired of you trying to push me around. I had enough of that in Texas. I will not allow it from you."
"You won't allow it?" Dominic laughed, still swaying from side to side. "What are you going to do about it?"
"You're drunk, you silly fuck! If you were going to come over here and start a fight, at least you could have come sober. You don't stand a chance." I swung my right arm up, catching him in the jaw. His head jerked up, and he fell straight backward. I stood over him, shaking my head sadly. "This is fucking stupid, Dominic."
He tried to retaliate by swinging his leg around in an effort to trip me, but I could see it coming and sidestepped him easily. "I want you to die." He told me, rolling onto his side.
"They couldn't kill me in Texas; you sure as hell aren't going to be able to do it."
"Oh no?" He reached clumsily into his jacket and produced a handgun. He unsteadily pointed it at me.
I couldn't even suppress a smile this time. "You think that's the first gun that's been aimed in my direction? You couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in your condition."
With much effort, he got back to his feet, keeping the gun trained on me. "You're not even fucking scared?"
"Nope." I reached over and hit the gun with my left hand, sending it clattered across the sidewalk.
Dominic watched the gun in horror. "You smug little shit," He leapt at me again, but this time I was ready. I blocked his first attempt and shoved him backward again.
"Go home and sleep it off," I muttered, turning back to the house. I heard him coming at me again, so I turned back quickly, but his foot hit mine and caused me to lose my balance. We fell hard, tumbling into the yard. I was on the bottom, so he thought he had the upper hand. He jeered at me. "Oh, look at the poor little pretty-boy, lying in the dirt."
I smiled as my fist connected with his nose, sending blood spurting all over my face. "I'm no pretty-boy."
However, he didn't react to his nose at all. "I hate you, I fucking hate you," He chanted over and over, trying to punch me repeatedly. I blocked most of his attempts and waited for him to run out of steam.
"Get the fuck off me," I demanded.
For the first time, he moved quickly, grabbing a fistful of my hair and jerking upward. He leaned in close, and I could smell the liquor on his breath. "You are going to go away, one way or another."
"No, I'm not going..." My eyes widened in shock. "What...the...fuck?"
He sat back, and I looked down to my stomach. A knife was buried in my left side, just under my rib cage. Finally, he rolled off of me, and with shaking hands I touched the handle of the knife. "What...what have you done?" I whispered, blinking several times as the front of my shirt was instantly soaked with blood. My body was beginning to feel cold, and I began to shake uncontrollably.
He was staring at me in disbelief. "Oh God...what did I...Frank!" His voice started to sound very far away as I began to slip into unconsciousness. I heard him rustling around, and then begin speaking again.
"You have got to get over here and help me! I don't know what to do...I think I killed him!"
