October
"Shane?" I asked in a shaky voice. "What happened to Frank?"
"Dominic...he...he stabbed him."
I gripped the phone tightly and shut my eyes. "Please tell me that you're joking."
"I wish I was, October. Dominic called me to come over and help him after he'd done it."
"He called you?"
"Yeah. I went over there, and Dominic was freaking out. He was drunk, and Frank laid in the front yard in a pool of blood."
"FUCK. No, no! This can't be fucking happening, Shane," I screamed, tears already flowing freely. "Stop it..."
"October, please! Calm down." Shane pleaded, and Charlotte placed a hand on my shoulder. I was in no state for comfort, however, and I shrugged her hand off. She looked down, her eyes full of hurt.
"How can you tell me to calm down?!" I shrieked, even louder this time. "My life was just beginning to come together, I had this man that I loved, and every time I fucking turn around someone is trying to take him from me." By the time I was finished with my rant I was hyperventilating, unable to breathe. "Where...where is he?" I managed.
"He's in the hospital. I brought him there myself. I'm still here."
"No, where is Dominic?" I demanded.
"I...I don't know. He took off after I put Frank in the car. Why?"
"I'm going to fucking kill him."
"October. Don't do anything stupid..." I didn't hear anything else he'd said because I'd hung up the phone. "Take me home, Charlotte." I said evenly.
"Don't you want to go to the hospital?"
I shook my head. "I have something to deal with first."
"October..." I turned to her, and she sucked a breath in quickly. The look on my face must have scared her, because she pulled out her keys and hurried to the car. "Okay, let's go."
Not a word was spoken on the way back to my house. I was shaking, and repeatedly tapped my forehead on the window. I'm sure no one knew what to say to me.
When we pulled into my driveway, Charlotte turned to me and finally spoke. "Do you want me to come with you?" I shook my head wordlessly. "October?" Hallie called from the backseat. She'd come along with us, unbeknownst to me. I was lost in my own little world.
"What?" I asked, looking at her blankly.
"It's going to be okay, you know. Frank is going to be okay."
I blinked and shut the door without responding. I know they were only trying to make me feel better, but I couldn't handle it right now. Only one thing could make me feel better.
I heard the gravel crunching on the rocks as they pulled away, and I slowly walked up to the house. I could see Frank's blood still shiny in the dead grass. Some of it was smeared up on the sidewalk, probably where Shane had dragged him to the car. Something silver and shiny caught my eye from the end of the sidewalk. I smiled as I bent to pick it up. Dominic's gun.
I went in the house and retrieved my keys from the hook. I saw Frank's phone lying on the counter, and almost as an afterthought I grabbed it and shoved it into my pocket. "I'm coming, Dom," I muttered as I backed out of the garage. "No one hurts Frank and gets away with it. You should know that by now." I drove around searching for Dominic for some time. I checked his house, the bars, and the bowling alley, all his usual haunts. He was nowhere to be found. All this did was further enraging me. As I thought of Dominic, his face was replaced by those of Roger and Eddie. "Motherfuckers," I hissed, gripping the steering wheel. "You're not going to hurt him anymore." I turned onto a gravel road that looked familiar, but I hadn't been here in years. When Dominic and I first started dating, we used to come to a small river near here and just sit on the rocks and talk. I wonder... I pulled off the road and looked around. Sure enough, just over the hill was the top of Dominic's blue truck.
