October
Several months passed as I grew accustomed to my therapy. According to my counselor, I was making great strides. Frank always took me while my family watched Aiden. I couldn't have had a better support system. Dominic's trial hadn't come up yet, but he was sure that he was going to plead guilty in exchange for a lesser sentence. I took Aiden to see him several times, and although it was hard for him to see his Dad that way, I believed that he still needed to have contact with him. Frank and Aiden grew very close without much effort on my part at all. Aiden loved his guitar lessons, and told Frank he would one day be in a band too. Frank glowed every time Aiden would mention this. It warmed my heart to see that despite everything, Aiden was still a happy and well-adjusted child.
Shane and Charlie's wedding plans were back in full swing, and they had a June wedding planned. Obviously having Dominic as a groomsman was out, so Frank had willingly stepped in. The months passed by too quickly, however, and the wedding was soon upon us. With each passing day Charlotte grew more and more nervous.
"October," She screamed into the phone. "My centerpieces still aren't done!"
"Calm down. They promised they'll be ready and they will!"
"But we're only five days away, this is ridiculous!"
"All right, Bridezilla, I understand that you're worked up, but you have plenty of other things to worry about. Give me their number and I'll take care of it, okay?"
She breathed a sigh of relief. "Would you? Oh, thank you so much!" She quickly gave me the number, and just before hanging up muttered, "Hey, one more thing."
"Sure, anything?"
"Don't ever call me Bridezilla again!"
"Then stop acting like one," I told her, laughing.
"Asshole." I could hear the smile in her voice as she hung up.
Even though Charlotte hadn't thought it was possible, all the arrangements were finalized and the day was upon us. Frank met the guys at the airport to see them to their hotel while Aiden came with me to get my hair done.
When I arrived at the salon the hairdresser was just putting Charlie's veil into her hair. "Ohh..." I sighed, dropping my purse.
"Aunt Charlie, you look so purty!" Aiden announced.
She turned to him, and tears shown in her eyes. "Thank you sweetie. Come here." She held our arms, being careful not to move her head.
"Hey Aiden, what about me?" Shannon turned in her seat, and Scarlett and I, who was in the chair next to Shannon, couldn't suppress our laughter. She'd obviously just gotten started, and all the hairdresser had managed to do was put huge barrel-style curls all over her head.
Aiden pulled away from Charlotte, took one look at Shannon and wrinkled his nose. "It looks like you have turds on your head."
Shannon turned back to the mirror in mock-horror. "But I thought it was pretty," She patted the curls and smiled at her reflection.
The hairdresser sighed and turned Shannon back into position. "If you would just hold still..." Soon Camille, Lillie, Kat, Ali, Blair, and Claire showed up and the salon was in full swing.
Aiden paced the salon restlessly while we were being primped, curled, and poked with bobby pins. "I hate girl stuff. Why couldn't I have just gone with Frank?" He whined.
"Because," I said, unable to look at him as the hairdresser was forcefully holding my head. "He had to go to the airport, and it would be a lot more boring than this is."
"No way! Frank is never boring Mom!"
"He's right, you know," Shannon offered. "You are much more boring than Frank, Mom."
"Thanks, Shannon," I told her, sticking my tongue out. "Just relax, Aiden. He's going to come and get you once they get back because we all have to change into our dresses."
Aiden plopped down into a chair and crossed his arms sulkily. "He better hurry up."
Aiden was climbing the walls and laying on the floor rolling from side to side, when Frank showed about 45 minutes later. When he saw my car pull up he nearly went through the glass. "He's here! He's here! Bye Mom!"
"Wait!" I ran to the door and held it closed before Aiden could rush out into the street. Frank stepped out of the car, took one look at me and wiggled his eyebrows. "Well hey there. Don't we look pretty?" He said as he opened the door. As soon as he did, Aiden rushed past him and ran to the passenger door.
"Ah! He escaped," I squealed. "God has that boy been looking forward to seeing you."
Aiden honked the horn, causing us both to jump. Frank turned to him with a smile. "Okay, got to go." He leaned in and quickly pecked me on the lips. "Oh, and one more thing," He said, turning back. "Don't ever send me to pick up four other grown men in a Volkswagen Beetle again."
"Squished?"
"You have no idea. It was okay, though. We just stuck Mikey in the trunk." He rushed back to the car as Aiden honked again. I saw him reach over and tousle Aiden's hair as he backed out.
"Come on," Charlie called. "Time to get our asses to the church!"
The ceremony was beautiful. Charlotte floated down the aisle, an absolute vision. Her dress was mostly white, with a tight bodice around her tiny waist and a beautiful design of deep crimson on the train. Our dresses were crimson as well, but the swirly design on the smaller trains were white. The guys wore black tuxes with crimson vests, and all the flowers were crimson and white as well. The entire ensemble was beautiful. Once at the reception, everyone cut loose. Frank and I danced until I was dizzy, and even with all the drama, everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. I noticed that Julianne and Gerard seemed to be keeping their distance, however. I shrugged it off, unable to dwell on other people's problems for too long.
Toward the end of the night, Charlotte grabbed me by the elbow and led me away from the crowd. "Have you done it yet?"
"No..."
"Why not? Come on, October."
"I can't." I snuck a side-long glance at Frank.
"Just do it, okay? Let me know."
I slipped my shaking hands down the sides of my dress and smoothed it nervously. My heart beat rapidly in my chest. I was scared. So scared.
