I was awakened at 6:15 that morning by the incessant beeping coming from my phone. I hit 'ignore' on the voicemail to make it go away and was shocked to find I had 19 missed phone calls. What the hell? Why hadn't I heard any of them? I didn't have time to ponder it or even look and see who the unknown caller was when someone started beating on my door.
"Julianne! JULIANNE!" It was Dominic that was standing on my doorstep screaming my name. I rushed to the door and flung it open.
"Dominic, what the hell is wrong?"
"Nothing!" He exclaimed breathlessly, pushing past me and going inside. He turned and grabbed both of my shoulders, squeezing them tightly. "They found her!"
"Found...her?"
"October, dumbass! They've found her and she's alive!"
I shook my head as the tears came instantly. "Please don't fuck with me, Dominic,"
"Do you really think I'd come to your house at this time of morning after calling 412 times just to play such an evil joke on you?" I stared at him with tears streaming down my face as he shook my shoulders. "I'm serious, Juli, they found her two hours ago. Get some shit packed; we're going to Wisconsin."
"Wisconsin?" I squeaked.
"Yeah, that's where she's at."
"I can't just leave, Dominic. I've got work, and..."
"Fuck work. Call in. I'll think they'll understand." I didn't move or respond, and he shook me once again. "What's the number? I'll call them for you."
Backing away from him, I walked to the middle of the living room and looked around blankly. Glancing down at my hand, I realized I was still holding my phone. Suddenly I dropped to my knees, clasping my hands together in prayer. "Thank you God! THANK YOU," I screamed.
Dominic rushed over, hauled me back to my feet and embraced me in a rib-crunching bear hug. We danced around the room, squealing and crying in excitement.
Finally, Dominic pulled away. "Alright, well get ready. Our plane leaves in three hours from Chicago. I want to be there with plenty of time to spare." He helped me throw a few things in a bag, waited while I called work, and then we were off.
"Did you call everyone?" I asked excitedly as we pulled out of my driveway.
He nodded. "Yep. October's Dad is watching Aiden, so they know what's going on. As much as he wants to see his daughter, he thinks it's better if hestays with Aiden. We don't know how she's doing mentally. Never thought I'dagree with Jim on something."
"Oh my God, I bet Aiden is so happy,"
"Are you kidding me? This is better than every Christmas morning and birthday rolled into one,"
"He'll have her back just in time for Christmas," I squealed, my eyes shining.
"I know. It was so sad. A couple of weeks ago, I asked him what he wanted for Christmas, and that's exactly what he said. All he wanted was for Santa to bring Mommy home. He thinks Santa's come through for him."
I was taken aback by the heartache of the story, and glad Dominic hadn't told me about it before now. It would have slayed me. "So did you call everyone else?"
"Yeah, I called her brothers, your Grandma, everyone I could think of."
"Did you call Gerard or...Frank?"
The smile was instantly wiped from Dominic's face. "No. I am not calling that fucker."
"Dominic, come on. Don't you think he deserves to know? He'll find out soon enough anyway."
