"She wanted our autographs. Just our autographs." Gerard told me, getting ready to open the door.
I digested this information before moving on with my questioning.
"Well why are we leaving? I thought we were going to talk to the trucker"
"We can't."
"What do you mean we can't? That bitch can't forbid..."
"He's gone. He was bailed out last night." Gerard said slowly.
My jaw dropped. "By who?"
"She said she absolutely couldn't give me that information."
"What the fuck?" I leaned against the door in frustration. I looked at Gerard hopelessly. "I know he knows something. I just know it."
He pursed his lips but didn't respond.
"We better get our asses back to the car," Mikey cut in. "They're going to mob us again. Look at them, they're practically salivating."
Gerard sighed and grabbed onto the door handle. "Alright, same as before. Just go straight to the car."
Gerard swung the door open and more questions flew at us. "Did you find out anything new, Gerard? Is it true that it's suspected that Frank and October might have left together willingly? Have missing person reports even been filed?"
"No comments, please," Gerard told them tersely as Bob shoved cameras out of his face. Mikey threw an arm around me and with our heads down we finally made it to the car.
Once inside, no one uttered a sound. I wanted to cry, but I didn't want to do it in front of these guys. If this new shit came out, October's reputation would go down in flames.
It was burning me, bubbling to the surface. I had to find out.
"Do you guys believe what she said?" I asked quietly, breaking the silence for the first time.
Three pairs of eyes were suddenly on me. Gerard laughed and Mikey shook his head. Bob actually rolled his eyes at me.
"Is that a no, then?"
"God, no," Gerard answered, still laughing a little. "I saw a picture of October. She's not that big. Neither is Frank, for that matter, but come on. How did she do it? Just, like, knock him over the head and drag him out? That fucker is heavier than you think. I should know. He's jumped on me plenty of times." Mikey and Bob nodded in unison as they had surely experienced this as well. "October is not from here, never been here before, with a limited amount of money and no car. How could she possibly keep him captive? And where? She doesn't have a gun on her, or a weapon of any sort, or she couldn't have gotten into the concert."
"Nope. No way could she have done it." Mikey was shaking his head. "She couldn't have gotten backstage, first of all, and if, by some divine intervention she did make it, we'd have seen her. I didn't see any girls back there. And then, like Gerard said, she'd have had to get him out of there. Impossible."
"Maybe she lured him out with a cookie and his fat ass followed," Bob said, smiling for the first time.
We all had to laugh at this. I pictured October with a cookie attached to a fishing pole while Frank followed behind with his hands out.
The humor quickly died as the somberness of the situation hit all of us again.
We arrived at my motel quickly, and each of them gave me a sweet hug. Tears stung my eyes but I held onto them.
"I've got your number, we'll keep in touch, okay?" Gerard told me, squeezing me extra tightly. "Promise me you won't lose hope. They're going to come back to us. You have to know that."
"I do," I whispered, even though I knew no such thing.
I watched them drive away feeling nothing but absolute, bottomless despair. Finally, I let the tears come, and come they did. I couldn't control them at all. I ran past the alarmed motel receptionist sobbing.
"Is everything alright, miss?" He called after me.
I couldn't answer, I could only keep running. When I got to the room, a made a half-hearted attempt to pretend that October was inside, waiting to go home. I opened the door slowly and looked around. Empty and cold just as I suspected. I took my phone out of my pocket and studied it for a moment. Why wouldn't it just ring with October on the other end? Without really thinking at all, I whipped the phone across the room as hard as I could. It hit the wall and pieces flew everywhere. "GOD DAMNIT, October! How could you do this to me?"
