chapter sixteen - july 12
"why'd you change your hair color?" jack asked, playing with the strands of alaska's newly dyed hair. "i loved it when it was blue, especially because you had it done for me," he smiled.
"it's still blue," she retorted. "do you not like the pink and purple?" she started feeling a bit insecure about her new look. she thought he had loved the look on lacy, and thought that she could try it herself. maybe she had thought wrong, and maybe she wasn't good enough to pull it off.
jack noticed her change in mood, and quickly try to say what he had actually meant. "no love, that's not it." he turned to face her, and cup her face in his hands. "just different that's all. your dyed hair will always be one of the things that drew me in, in the first place."
even with his words that sounded quite sincere, alaska couldn't believe him. she didn't have it in her to accept the fact that he still chose her out of every other girl, that he wanted her. she still failed to see how important she was to him. "you think it looks better on her, don't you?"
jack scrunched her eyebrows up. "what?" he said in confusion, then it all seemed to come together. "lacy?" he could tell by the way she turned her head away from him that he had been right. "love," he said softly turning her head to him yet gain with his fingers on her chin, "that couldn't be any more wrong." it pained him to see that she couldn't see the value of her beauty when it comes to him. it pained him to see her still so insecure about herself even after the countless amount of times he told her the opposite. "i like you, not lacy, not any other girl, but you."
"how are you so sure? how are you so sure you won't get bored of me?" she asked, because she couldn't help but do it. she had gone down this path many times with boys, with her "friends," and even with her so-called family. she could never be certain, and anyone that's been what she'd been through wouldn't blame her either.
his face actually twisted in actual pain, because he didn't know what to say to reassure her. he knew that whatever he said, she wouldn't believe him. heck, even he didn't believe himself if he had said it. however, he knew with all of his heart that right now, in this moment, she was the only girl he saw. he didn't know if she was his forever, but he did know that he didn't want to lose her.
since he couldn't trust himself with words, he put all of his might on his actions instead.
he leaned forward and kissed her like he never kissed a girl before. he pressed his lips hard against her to make sure that she could feel his affection for her. he kissed her tenderly, not daring to break the pure girl she was on the inside. he treated her with care as they kissed, because that's what she deserved. he removed his hands from her face, and trailed them down to her waist. he held her tight to tell her subtly that he wasn't letting her go anytime soon.
he swept her off her feet.
they pulled away, and she couldn't help but smile. this was all she ever wanted. she could feel the surge of happiness, and she felt even more happy knowing it was going nowhere with him by her side. she felt content knowing that the feeling she had lost for so long, and secretly wanted it back, was right here with her.
she felt the three words on the tip of her tongue, but didn't dare speak them. she knew she would scare him away, and only hurt herself if he didn't return those words.
she laid back on his chest as he wrapped his arms around her. he planted a gentle kiss on her forehead, and she sighed in content.
she looked over to the clock and said, "i have to leave in a few for work."
