chapter twenty - july 19

Alaska crept into her house as if she were some criminal. From the way she was silently tip-toeing around the house, you would've have thought she was. In reality, she was trying to be as quiet as possible and scope around the house to look for her father, without actually waking him up or him noticing her presence if he were here.

She walked carefully around the corner, and stood right in front of her father's room. Unlike most times, it was wide open and that surprised her a bit. She peaked in a bit, and realized that her father was still sleeping.

Her father had been sleeping an awful lot lately. She should be relieved that he is never up to beat her nowadays, but his behavior was quite odd. That worried her immensely. He wasn't acting like his usual self, and she didn't know what was up.

From where she stood, he looked so peaceful in his sleep. With his constant inhales and exhales with his chest rising up and down, he looked almost... happy. It has been a while since she's seen her father this way. It was kind of a nostalgic feeling for her.

She so badly wanted to step closer to share the moment with him, but she knew how stupid that was. He could easily wake up and pound her to the floor. She watched him from afar. "You don't need mom to be happy, dad," she whispered quietly to herself, although she wished her father heard her words. "You have me. We're still a family. You don't have to go through the pain alone. I understand. Please don't be like this forever. It pains me to see you that way."

She slowly walked away from his room, and thankfully reached her room when her phone rang. She picked it up. "Hello?" she questioned into the phone.

"Are you alright, miller?" Jake's voice asked.

"Yea," she answered slowly, slightly confused. "Why wouldn't i be?"

"You haven't called me to ask for a new supply."

"He hasn't been asking for any."

His voice didn't reply for a while, and she knew he was thinking about it. Hell, she had been thinking about it as well. "That's a bit odd."

"I know," she sighed, "but he's doing okay."

"Are you okay?"

"I'm okay," she reassured him.

"That's good," he replied back.

"Well, I've got to get to work," she told him.

"Well, go on then. You'll get out of here one day," he told her, because he knew how hard she's been working for it.

"Well, look who decided to finally go to work," Chad told her as she made her way inside the employers only zone, "or did you simply forget that you... i don't know," he paused and seemed to be thinking deeply about it with his finger on his chins, "had a job." He had said it sarcastically, and then chuckled about it afterwards. "I missed having you here. The other workers are so boring."

"I'm sorry," she said sincerely. "Jack haven't let me go to work."

"I see that," he smiled. "Is he at least treating you nice?"

She tried to contain her smile, but it erupted brightly on her face. "He's treating me fine."

"Well then, get your little, cute butt in here, and get to work," he said.

She laughed at her best friend. "I've missed you too, chad." she grabbed her notepad and pen, and was about to walk out into the diner, when she turned around. "thank you."
