chapter five - june 10, 2015

"your house is pretty big," alaska mumbled when they walked into jack's house, with him closing the door softly behind him.

alaska was currently in awe at how nice and clean it was. from all the beer bottles and the things her father never bothered to clean up, she began to forget to what a normal household looked like. it was a comforting sight.

"not really," he shrugged.

"it's way bigger than mine," she whispered under her breath.

he took alaska's hand in his, and led her up to his bedroom. "you can sleep in here," he said, and she widened her eyes.

he wanted her to sleep in his bed? "no, that's alright. i can take the couch," she said, rushing out of the room.

"don't be silly," he sighed, catching a hold of her hand. "i can sleep on the floor while you sleep on my bed if that's make you feel any less uncomfortable," he offered, surprising the both of them. he never made that suggestion to a girl before. he was never rude to not let them stay over the night on his bed, but he never told them that he would sleep on the cold floor for their sake. he always thought it was his bed, and no one had the right to make him not sleep on it if he wanted to. but here he was, giving it up to alaska.

she shook her head, feeling quite shy. "it's your bed, so you should sleep on it. i can sleep on the floor."

"stop it," he warned her, giving her a pointed look, which she returned with a look of her own, one of confusion. "i'm trying to be a gentleman here, so just please take the bed."

she stared at him in shock. jack johnson was trying to be a gentleman and for her too. she definitely knew something was up, and she was determined to find out what it was. "why are you being like this?" she asked, and she was in no mood to not get an answer. she was okay with getting told directly all the hurtful things, but it always hit her harder when someone was leading her on and lying to her.

his eyebrows shot up, and he knew she knew something. he didn't know how she knew, but she did. she was looking at him with an expectant look, and he tried to hide his nerves by nonchalantly shrugging. "i'm not hiding anything."

she raised one eyebrow as she sat on his bed. "no one's ever nice to me unless they want something. what do you want?"

she talked about this situation like she knew about it all too well, and he wondered how many people treated her like this. he wondered how many people treated her like she was nothing, then warm up to her, and just leaving her stranded when they're done with her.

somewhere inside him - probably his stupid conscious - told him that he didn't want to be those type of people. he wanted to actually stick around, and know more about her. so he told her the truth, "sammy and i made a bet to see if i could get you to fall for me then break your heart." he tensed up, bracing himself for her reaction.

to his surprise, she didn't look mad. she looked quite neutral.

"oh," she breathed, feeling a sense of hurt, but she didn't want to show it. it was like a huge blow to her heart, and it scared her that she was feeling the immense shot of pain after knowing him for only a day. she was glad that he didn't lead her on, and make her believe that he even had some feelings for her, because that would've been way worse. "thank for telling me. i can fake it if you want, and you can win the bet. no harm done," she lied.
