chapter ten - july 2
today is july 2nd. the dreaded day for the miller family. the day that had brought so much joy to the husband and wife just a mere 18 years ago. the day that had changed their lives forever. the day they cherished for a few peaceful years afterwards. the day the two held their world in their arms, and cooed broken promises to their little girl. the day everything changed only three years later (if i already put a different age for when her mother died, i'm sorry. just please tell me bc i forgot lol). the day everything came tumbling down right in front of the toddler's eyes. the day her whole life disappeared right before her before she could reach out and capture a single sense of happiness. the day her whole life changed for the worse. the day she lost everything. the day her father lost his other half, along with it, his heart and soul. the day he became so dark he could barely see his wrongs, and the day life was taken from her before she could even enjoy it.
july 2nd's the day everything happened, good and bad.
alaska woke that day, and she instantly could feel the tears surrounding her eyes. it was for the same reason for the past 15 years. in her dreams, she saw her mother. she saw a life that could have been, if not for her. she saw a loving family with her mother trying her best to cook, but could accomplish nothing more than two dishes of fried rice and noodles, and a side of eggs. she even heard her father's laughter, a sound she only loved in her dreams, because he sounded happy. hell, he looked happy with the way he smiled at her mother, the way he hasn't smiled at her since that day. she saw them throwing around playful banter which lead to a whole minute of just pure laughter.
she saw the life she wished and hoped for.
a life that had been taken away from her, because of her.
new tears sprouted as she remembered all of the annual routines that happened on this day. a lump was stuck in her throat as she choked down her own sobs. she didn't want to wake her father any earlier than she had to deal with him. she needed more time.
she reluctantly pulled her blanket of off her body, but all she really wanted to do was bury herself further and further into it to the point where she would just magically disappear for the day or two or maybe even forever.
she dragged her feet across the floor as she made her way towards the kitchen. her lips twitched up just a tiny little bit when she saw the beer and other shit jake had promised to get her.
she was so grateful to have him by her side. she only wished that he was with her all the time, because he was closest thing to a fatherly figure that she has ever had. she felt a pent up anger in her whenever she thought about it, but she was reminded by herself that he had his own problem and couldn't take her in even he wanted to. he was barely making it through by himself, let alone having to protect some teenager.
she quickly opened the fridge and popped a couple of beers in there, before getting out a pan and placing it on stove and turning on the heat. she got out the eggs and popped two into the frying pan. she got out another pan to make her mother's famous fried rice.
her mother liked experimenting with different cuisines even though she had no talent in the kitchen. she simply didn't care, and that was one of her greatest aspects. she didn't give a crap, and kept on doing what made her happy. alaska only wished that she had inherited that characteristic from her mother. but anyways, asian culture food had always been one of her mother's favorite.
