chapter two - june 10, 2015
"Hey, you!" Alaska's boss called for her.
Alaska cringed at the tone of the man's tone of voice. His appearance didn't help him much either. He was a chubby middle-aged man, with horrible sideburns and a bushy mustache. The saying "don't judge a book by it's cover" did not apply to him, because he was the same on the inside, as well as on the outside. His personality was equally as terrible as his looks, and that's the nicest way Alaska could describe him in her mind. He goes by the name of Mr. Walter, and most of the time, he acted as if a crocodile bit his behind.
Alaska turned around reluctantly, not in the mood for his lectures. She would have quit if she wasn't this desperate for money. Even having night jobs during school and the summertime, she didn't have enough money. Even when she took on a few babysitting jobs, which really helped her more than just the money, she didn't have enough money for what her necessities and some stuff she just needed for herself to mentally survive. So when she saw a job opening at this small diner she walked past one evening, she didn't hesitate to apply.
"Yes, Mr. Walter?" She questioned, avoiding his eye-contact because all she ever saw were cruel eyes. She didn't need another pair of them.
"You work from twelve in the afternoon to five. Remember to always be nice to customers, or else you push them away. If we lose a customer because of you, don't be surprised to see less amount of money on your paycheck for the week."
Alaska was just blocking out most of what he was saying because she worked at enough restaurants to know the basic rules. She certainly didn't need for this man to yell it at her. She did, however, find it ironic how he wanted her to be nice towards the customers when he was mean to basically everyone. Plus, he yells like people are a whole state away. If anything, he would be the one to scare away the customers.
"When you leave for your shift, make sure to get everything cleaned up before the next person shows up. Half of your tips would be mine," he stated, and her eyes widened. She had never worked anywhere, where the boss would take even a little of the worker's tip. It seemed unfair to her. She guessed that she had to work here longer than needed, unfortunately. "We get a lot of customers here, especially in the summer, so make sure you don't keep anyone waiting too long."
She nodded, quietly.
She heard him mumble, "I'll probably have her fired if she never talks," before she saw him walk into his soundproof office.
She sighed deeply and kept in mind why she was doing this in the first place. She really needed the motivation to help her with this job.
She straightened her uniform, pulling the sleeves to her white button-up shirt down. She fixed her collar which was black, along with the line where the buttons were. She tugged her black skirt, making sure it passed her butt, resulting into it stopping halfway down her thigh.
She heard the door of the diner ring open. She quickly picked up her notepad and pen and followed the customers to their seats.
She braced herself, before speaking. "Hello. Welcome to Walter's. What do you guys want?" She asked them nicely, handing them the menus.
She didn't have any interest to look at them, rather looking down at her notepad with the pen in her hand, waiting for them to tell her their orders.
"Hey, don't I know you?" A voice asked, and she contemplated looking up.
She didn't know if she should look up at the person who asked that because the voice did sound familiar. But if the voice belonged to the one person she was thinking of, she didn't want to look up anyways.
