“Who’s Chris?” A voice brought me back to Miss King’s office.
“What?” I was startled. How could they know?
I heard someone clearing her throat nervously. I turned to see it was Kathy. Seeing she had my attention, she repeated, “Who’s Chris?”
“What do you mean?” I tried to play dumb but it didn’t work.
“I don’t know, you just mumbled something about a Chris”
Shit!
“Well… He’s my… my twin brother.” I sighed.
I cringed when I heard what Stacy whispered to Britanny, “She has a twin brother? I bet he’s just as weird as she is…” and the giggles that followed.
“You really have a twin brother?!” Jade’s voice echoed.
She was looking at me skeptically with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes.”
“And he lives in France?” She carried on.
“Yes.”
“Any other siblings?”
“Two older brothers: John and Mike… And yes, they live in France, too.” I added hoping she’d drop the subject.
She sighed loudly before writing a few things in her notebook.
She then suddenly stopped writing and put her pen down.
“Ok, Sam. Listen, this paper is due this afternoon at 3, so stop the bullshit and cooperate. What do your parents do for a living?”
“I don’t freaking know, ok!” I snapped. “I’ve already told you more than most people know! What else do you want from me?!”
My hands were shaking, I just wanted to get away from there.
“Oh, the weirdo is getting angry.” Brittany said before resuming her giggling.
“Leave it. I think she’s telling the truth.” Kathy stated.
The three other girls looked at her as if she'd grown another head. Kathy tilted her head slightly and looked at each girl pointedly, as if silently challenging them to openly disagree with her.
It seemed to work as Jade turned back to me with a smile.
“Ok, let’s move on to more interesting questions. Just say what comes first through your mind, ok?”
I nodded.
“Favourite colour?”
“Blue.”
“Favourite singers, bands?”
“Coldplay, Muse, King of Leon...”
“Crappy musical tastes…” Brittany commented.
“Favourite food?”
“Fish and chips.”
“Junk food, tsk tsk…” Stacy whispered with a scrunched up nose.
“Favourite girls in school?”
“Danny May, and Cheyenne Roberts.”
“Cheyenne wouldn’t even give her the time of the day…” They both giggled at Brittany’s new intervention.
Jade must have picked on my growing irritation as she stood up and asked them to get out of the office with a loud “Out!” and a finger pointed to the door. After some whining, they both left the room pouting like two kids.
