"Right, I’ve had about enough of this stupid day, already. So Adam, can you please, tell me what Martin is all about?”

“I… I don’t know.” He answered, looking down at the floor.

“What do you mean, you don’t know???” I snapped.

“Come on! Simmons, stop being a coward, and tell her where you’ve been this afternoon!” Martin demanded.

Adam raised his head so slowly, it looked unnatural. I gasped when I barely recognized him because of how deformed his face was, by the pure hatred emanating from him as he was staring at Martin.

“What are you trying to do, Martin?” He seemed so calm. “Do you actually think that Sam will fall for you, because you’ve made up something about me?” He turned to me, “Come here, Sam.” His voice sounded fake, but I thought that maybe things would calm down if I complied.

I walked to him and he stiffly put his arm around my shoulders before kissing me coldly on the forehead.

Fuck, something is really wrong with him… So what? Is he seeing somebody else? Pfff Don’t be stupid, Sam! You’re talking about your Adam, your Knight in shining armor. Well, maybe he’s finally had enough of me...

No… It can’t be that, can it?

“Adam,” I heard myself ask. “Where were you this afternoon?”

He abruptly took his arm off my shoulders, took a step back from me and started playing with his hair nervously.

He was stalling.

I started clenching and unclenching my hands.

“Fuck, Adam! Just tell me the truth! Are you seeing someone else?”

“What?! No, Sam! God! No! I… I lo- care too much about you to even look at other girls that way…”

He sounded genuine for the first time since the beginning of this conversation.

I relaxed and started breathing normally again.

“So what is this all about, then?” I was so confused.

Martin answered me.

“I’m going to tell you where he was, then, since he seems incapable of telling you… He was having tea with mummy and daddy, wasn’t he?”

Okay…

“Oh, you’ve been seeing them? Why didn’t you tell me when I mentioned them?” My voice was small.

When Adam didn’t answer my question, Martin got annoyed.

“Probably because he never stopped seeing them, did he?” He said.

“Fuck, Martin!" I snapped. “What is wrong with you?! He’s been in contact with his parents, big deal! So what? To me, it actually sounds pretty normal for someone to want to see his parents, so why are you making such a fuss about it?”

I then turned to Adam,

“And why didn’t you tell me you were seeing them again? You knew how worried I was to be the cause of a disagreement between you and your parents, I kept asking you how you felt and suggesting you should go and see them, when you were already in good terms with them? I don’t get it…”

I sighed.

“Neither of you make any sense.”

I suddenly remembered that Danny was there.

Maybe she’ll know what to do to sort this mess out.

So I turned to look at her.

She lowered her eyes guiltily as mine reached her face, and she started biting her lower lip nervously.
