I put the phone to my ear.
“Hm?”
“Sam…” He sighed heavily. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know they’d react this way.”
He paused and sighed again. “Listen, I’m going to stay here tonight.”
“You are?” I asked, as something broke into a million pieces inside of me.
“Sam… Are you crying?”
I did my best to sound normal when I replied.
“No, I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
I hung up.
“So?” Brad and Martin asked at the same time.
“So, nothing.” Tears were rolling down freely. “He’s staying there tonight, he’s sorry about his parents.” I said.
“A fucking coward, he is!” Martin snapped.
Ignoring his comment, I grabbed the pint and took huge gulps of it.
I immediately felt better as the ice cold liquid flowed soothingly down my throat.
After a while, Brad tentatively asked,
“What can I do to help you feel better, Sammy girl? I’d happily go and kill them, or at least shake them up a bit, but I don’t think it would actually do any good…”
“There’s nothing you can do, Brad… but thanks.” I answered honestly.
“I’m certainly going to beat Adam up, tomorrow, if he doesn’t get his sorry arse down to yours, as soon as possible!”
“What’s the point, though, Martin? It won’t change the fact that he wasn’t there when I needed him, will it?!”
“Maybe not, but I’ll feel much better afterwards.” His cocky singsong voice was back, making Brad and I chuckle.
I finished my pint and told the guys I was off. I hugged Brad quickly and promised to phone him the day after.
Martin insisted on walking me home.
As soon as we started walking, he took his phone out and called someone.
“Danniells? Yeah, it’s me. Are you with Danny? ... Did Simmons phone you? ... I know, but she’s with me right now. The fuckers treated her like shit!” He exclaimed, at last.
He then turned to me and mouthed “Danny” before handing me his phone.
“Sam?”
“Hm”
“What happened?” She seemed really worried.
I repeated what I had already told Brad and Martin and when I stopped, I was once again, startled by her silence.
“Danny?” I asked uncertainly.
“I’m here, Sam. It’s just that… I can’t believe they did what they did. I mean, they come to all our football games so we kind of see them pretty often. What you’ve described is so out of character for them that I don’t know what to think. Especially, as they were so understanding at the very beginning, when they let Adam stay at yours until you felt better…
Plus, I’m surprised Adam didn’t follow you… Mind you, he’s really close to his parents… Maybe, he feels stuck between you and them, and he doesn’t know which side to choose…”
I knew she was thinking out loud but her comments stung.
So they are nice to Josh and Danny and horrible to me?
