I wasn't like most girls growing up. I hated all girly things from nail polish to the colour pink. I loved playing sports like soccer and basketball. I would ride my bike and play in mud while the other girls my age played with dolls. Ugh, dolls were the worst. I was always seen with a ball in my arms, not a doll like most girls.
My mom was concerned that I didn't like to do girl stuff. My dad, on the other hand, thought it was awesome that his daughter loved sports. My mom got over her concern when she found out that dad was 'secretly' reading me fairy tale stories.
My dad would read me stories, and I would always ask questions.  I just hated the fact that the princess was always getting rescued by the prince. Why were the princesses always so helpless? Shouldn't the princess get the glory sometimes for saving the prince?
After reading a fairy tale, I would start to dream about what my life would be like as a princess. I would dream about having a family who loved and cared for me always, friends who would stand by me through tough times, and eventually a prince of my very own.
Let me just tell you my dreams of a 'Happily Ever After' started to fall apart on my 10th birthday.
