January 19, 2008

The day started like any normal birthday. I was woken up in bed by the smell of my mom's famous homemade double chocolate pancakes.
I ran downstairs to my dad's open arms and a big wet kiss on the check.
"Happy birthday, Champ!! I can't believe my little girl is ten years old, already. It feels like just yesterday I was pushing you in a stroller through the park."
"Daddy. I'm a big girl. I'm not your baby anymore," I explained.
"Alex, you will always be my baby girl."
While in my dad's arms, I gave him a big hug and kiss on the cheek. I was brought into the kitchen and had a stack of pancakes placed in front of me by my mom.
"Happy birthday, Alex," said my mom from behind the fridge door, "Do you want orange juice or chocolate milk?"
"Chocolate milk, please."
My mom walked over from the fridge and handed me a glass and the chocolate milk jug.
"Here, sweetheart."
"Thanks."
I started to eat my pancakes and sipped at my chocolate milk, when my dad sat down and said, "Remember, champ, when we said you were too young to have a basketball net? Well, your mother and I decided you were finally old enough for one. So we are going to pick it up today while you're at school. Then after school we will pick you up."
"Dad! Thanks so much! I can't wait. I've always wanted a basketball net. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I shouted as I rose from my chair to give my parents a huge hug.
The morning ended with me in my snow gear holding a snowball. I was standing on the front porch waiting for the bus to arrive to bring me to school. As the bus turned onto our street, I gave my mom and dad a big hug and kiss.
"I love you. I can't wait to see you after school."
My parents replied by giving me a kiss on the forehead, simultaneously.
As I was stepping on the bus, I heard my mom and dad say, "Have fun. We love you."
