Jonas dropped me off a couple houses away and kissed me before I left the vehicle.
"I love you. Call me tonight if you have any ideas about Saturday," Jonas shouted out the window.
"I will. Love you, too," I yelled back.
I watched him drive away before booking it home. I collected myself and then walked through the door. I was greeted with a less than happy face.
"Where have you been, Alexandra?" Mrs. Jameson questioned.
"There was a last minute basketball practice I had to attend. I'm so sorry, I insisted, "I'll get to my chores immediately and skip dinner if I have to."
She started me down for a few seconds before saying, "Alright, but if I find out otherwise, you will never play basketball or leave this house again. Do we understand each other?"
"Yes," I lied.
"Good. Now get to work," Mrs. Jameson responded with slight aggression.
I walked to my room dumped my bag and books and got to work. I started with laundry. My least favourite chore, I might add. I then did the gardening, watering, and cleaning the pool. I finished off my chores by cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen.
While doing my chores I thought and thought. How could I get out of the house Saturday night without being ratted out? Saying there's a two day basketball tournament in Ottawa? No, too suspicious. Sneak out? Impossible!
I needed to find a good cover story. But what?
I had completed my chores by eight o'clock, and I swiped a handful of grapes and a nectarine before heading to my room. I closed the door and ate my 'supper' while thinking. I was exhausted from thinking, so I called Jonas.
The phone rang for about two seconds before I heard, "Hey, Lex. What's up?"
"Not much," I confessed.
"So why did you call?" Jonas asked.
"Because my brain is throbbing from thinking so much," I explained, "I've been thinking about Saturday night. I have no clue what to do."
"Well, take a breath. In. Out. In. Out," Jonas said, "Now what have you got so far."
"Making up a two day tournament in Ottawa and sneaking out. That's all I got," I admitted.
"It's a start. Couldn't you just..," Jonas trailed off.
"Do what?" I questioned.
"I don't know. Maybe you could sweet talk Hunter into helping you," Jonas muttered.
"What! Why would I ask for his help! He hates me," I exclaimed.
"I know you're not on speaking terms with him right now, but he might be your only choice."
"What if he doesn't want to help? What if he rats me out? What if he-" I was cut off by Jonas.
"Stop with the 'What ifs' and just ask him. If he says no, well then we can come up with something else," Jonas explained, "Lex, I know this isn't what you want to hear, but if we have to cancel the date it's fine. I would under-"
"No. We are not cancelling the date," I interrupted sourly, "I will ask for Hunter's help, okay?"
"Wow. Okay. It sounds like someone really wants to go on a date with me," Jonas laughed.
