After the news of my parents' death, the officer, Ben, brought me to my house to grab some of my stuff. I almost couldn't go into the house. I had so many great memories of me and my parents. Ben had to hold my hand the whole time because I couldn't stop crying.
Once we had some of my things, the officer said Miss Dolly had offered to take care of me while matters were settled.
I stayed with Miss Dolly for two weeks and there were very few things I did or learned:1. I went to my parents funeral and now much of that memory is just a blur of tears.
2. None of my extended family loved or wanted me. I figured this out while eavesdropping on one of Miss Dolly and Officer Ben's many chats. Miss Dolly cried and said things about how horrible my family. "How could her family not want to help a ten year old girl who had gone through a huge tragedy," was a reoccurring theme in these discussions. Miss Dolly said I should stay with her but Officer Ben said that I should go to an orphanage or be put into the foster care system.
3. I was alone in the world. This dawned on me as I was sleeping one night in Miss Dolly's guest bedroom. My parents were gone, my extended family didn't want me, and I had no friends other than Miss Dolly. I had no one otherwise.
