Chapter: 4- Getting a Car Ride

Sarah's POV

After I had calmed down and thrown the candy bar wrapper away I began to walk home. It was a long walk, I mean very long, and about five minutes in I began to sweat.

Which was crazy because it was about the middle of November and it was chilly out now in Michigan. Man, I'm out of shape! Sighing as I knew there was no changing my mind about the walk home, I pulled my t-shirt tighter around my body and kept on walking towards my house.

I lived in a fairly good neighborhood, there was little crime, the neighbors were nice and I didn't have any problems with bullies around here. Though when I walked home I had to walk through an not so good area. Every time I walked past here I grew nervous, the streets were bare, the only signs of life were the graffiti that was painted fresh. The community had practically abandoned this area as well, the streets were cracked, the houses were in ruin and even the sidewalks were being overgrown with weeds that had spread from the waist high grass.

I was just glad I'd decided to leave school before it even remotely got dark outside. They had also failed to update this road with street lights and it was terribly creepy at night. Breathing out, I watched as white smoke escaped my mouth, I guess it was colder than I'd first thought. Actually, it really was, I'd grew up in Michigan, but I'd still yet to adjust to the cold weather that entailed in the winter months. Especially without a winter coat or even just a thin hoodie to protect me from the cold.

Even though I was tired I began to walk faster, hoping to get out of this particular area as quick as I could. It didn't exactly help when I heard a car going past me, but instead of it just driving faster it slowed down, causing my heart to beat faster than it already was. I began to walk even faster, but the car followed and soon I heard the sound of the window rolling down. Oh gosh! Today is the day I die, right? I can already see it in the news, 'Tragedy has struck! Fat High School girl dies from drive by'. Please, God, let me live, I swear this time I'll actually try harder to change, I'll actually promise that I'll try to lose weight, no matter how difficult it is, or how many temptations arise!

But finally, I sucked my breath in and looked at the car. The first thing I noticed was that it looked expensive, and it was black. I didn't know the name of the car but it was nice enough. Also, a very familiar face was staring at me through the open window of the car. James, I swear I've been seeing a lot of him lately.

"Get in. You shouldn't be walking around here, it's dangerous." Then he unlocked the doors. Honestly, I had no idea what to do right now. Yeah, it was dangerous around here, but what did he care? And yes, his car did look warm and inviting from this chilly weather, but I still didn't know him. Neither did he know me. Oh yeah there was also the fact that he was in the same crowd of my bullies, yeah he'd never joined them but still...it felt wrong.

"Ummm..." Looking at him I was frozen in place, wondering if I should accept or refuse his offer, but then I remembered how with what happened today he just stood there, like everyone else and didn't help me or anything. How he was popular, and I was not, how he probably only wanted to offer me help so he could only drive off and laugh at me when I tried walking towards him. There was no way someone like him was actually trying to give help out someone like me.

"Are you coming or not?" His voice was rough, deep but at the same time it was smooth and at the sound of it, an involuntary shudder passed through me. Whoa. I don't know how I didn't notice it before but he really should talk more. These were the first few words he'd ever spoken to me, and already I was losing it. Thinking more on it I realized this was actually the first we had ever communicated at all. Usually, he's just there sending me words I could never understand with his eyes, and I'm running away from his intense stare.

"N-no. I'm not coming." The words passed through my lips before I could stop them and so did another shudder, this one actually from the cold weather. I actually had no idea where I had gathered the courage to say those words to him from anyway, usually I just go with what anyone says, but I guess I could only because he's the only one who hasn't given me a reason to fear him yet.

Shivering I watched as James looked at me like usual; in disappointment, or was it disgust. "Are you sure, Sarah? It's starting to get cold out, and you don't even have a jacket on. I'd be sure to just drop you off at your home, nothing else...swear." Smiling he waved his hands over his chest in the 'cross my heart' promise thing and leaned over to open the door I still hadn't made a move to approach. I had to stifle a smirk at that, seeing as he was a boy who gave off the impression of being a very bad one, and him crossing his tattooed arm in a kids manner was just...amusing.

Shivering from a breeze that passed by I gave up and climbed into his very warm, and comfortable car. It was better to die warm than cold, and so far I'm doing good, he hasn't tried to kill me...yet. Taking a few minutes to study the inside of his car I was surprised. Just like any normal person he had CDs lying around, and looking closer I could just make the album out of The Neighbourhood, I loved The Neighbourhood!

Besides that, his car was spotless, like he'd never used it before and the seats were black leather and everything seemed to match that theme. Sleek and black, that's pretty much it. Looking in the rear view mirror I could see the back seats, which had a soccer ball and a bag, I'm guessing soccer gear/work out clothes in it?

I'm not that sure what they bring to these...athletic activities. I then turned my attention to the one thing I'd been avoiding since I'd gotten into this car. James, he was looking ahead, his tattooed hands on the steering wheel as he drove to nowhere in particular.

I'd yet to give him my address, and even so he was driving in the direction of my house. Man, he always seems to surprise me. First, he actually knew my name, yes I did notice this was the first time he'd said it, and now he knew where I lived? Letting my breath out I decided to initiate the conversation.

"S-so do you know where my house is?" My voice sounded breathless like I'd just ran a mile, but I hadn't, which made me more than a little self-conscious. Will he finally just stop with the act and make fun of me like everyone else? Of course, he would he's just like them; popular, and see what happened before when I thought I could be friends with someone popular; they betrayed me and told me where I belonged. And it hurt... a lot, I don't want to get hurt again.

"No, I don't know. That might of been something I should've asked first. Damn. Am I even heading in the right direction?" Glancing at me for a second, it seemed as if there was worry on his face before his eyes were once again focused on the road.

"Uh. Um...no it's a-alright, you're heading in the right direction. Actually, I live pretty near to where we are now..." Looking out the car's window I could make out the starting of a familiar area, and my thoughts automatically began to think on the bakery that was just around the corner. "You. You know what? Um, do you know Daisies Sweets?"

"Uh yeah, that's where everyone usually gets their sweets around here, why?" Looking at me out the corner of his eye, I could see the confused look he was giving me.

"Could you just drop me off there?" Gulping a little I began to nervously fiddle with my fingers, though I hadn't thought about it for long it was actually one of the best ideas I'd had by far. Since the bakery was pretty well known, he could just drop me there, and I could avoid him finding out where I lived. That way we both got what we wanted, he dropped me off somewhere, and I could avoid him finding out where I lived.

"Are you sure?" His voice was deep, the sound of it making me shudder once more, and not seeming to have the energy to speak at the moment I nodded a little. Though I guess he still managed to see my message as with a little hum of acknowledgment he turned the car around the corner, driving me to the bakery.
