The next morning, we were all called to the center of Headquarters, where supposedly the Director was waiting. I could tell that we were all pretty nervous, I didn't think that any of them had actually met their leader before. Either that, or Alan usually recited all the prime numbers to keep himself distracted for fun and Portia found the folds of her shirt quite interesting. A ding signaled the stop at the main office of Headquarters, making us all jump like startled children.
"Oh, well aren't you all just the most adorable!" I was taken aback. this wasn't what I'd been expecting at all. First off, I was twenty-two. It had been at least ten years since anyone had called me adorable. Second, this was the person who was in charge of possibly the greatest fighting force in the modern United States.
Behind a dark, mahogany desk was a woman, probably around forty, with light brown hair and a slight Scottish accent.
"Look at you!" She gestured towards us, and then at some plushy chairs. "Come in, come in. Make yourselves comfortable, please!" I saw various expressions of disbelief and surprise on everyone's face. Once she was satisfied that we were all okay, she retook her place behind the desk.
"Excuse me, but-" I began. She held up her hand to stop me, and my lips immediately stopped moving, like she had absolute control over my brain.
"Now, now, all in good time." She had one of those smiles that makes you cheerful but uncomfortable at the same time.
"But for now, my name is Emberlee Garnet, but you will refer to me as the Director. Understood, miss Indigo Astoria?" She folded her hands neatly on her desk.
"Yes, Director," I looked down as if there was something on my jeans.
"Alright then. I assume that you've been given your schedule, Indigo?" I looked up as she addressed me.
"Uh, no," I began the staring match with my lap again, a bit embarrassed.
"Well then obviously my people aren't doing their jobs properly." She huffed, pushing a button on an intercom.
"Annie, why doesn't Indigo have her schedule yet?" Her voice was strong and powerful. I felt bad for the person on the other end of the line.
"I'm not sure, Director. I'll bring it right up... If that's okay, of course." The voice replied shakily, obviously afraid of the Director just as much as I was, but she probably had better reason to be. The girl came up and handed a small sheet of paper.
"Thank you, Annie, that'll be all." The girl nodded but refused to meet her boss's eyes, and scampered quickly back downstairs. My schedule was tight, but I was willing to follow it.
*Breakfast: 7:45 *Shooting Practice: 8:50 *Lunch: 12:00 *Group Training: 1:30 *Studying: 6:00
*Dinner: 7:00 *Free Time: 8:20 *Lights Out: 10:00
"Now then," The Director started, "where were we? Ah, yes! So when will you all be leaving?" Looks of surprise crossed every face in the room except hers and Lucas's as the rest of us all leaned forward and shouted, "What? Leaving?" She scoffed.
"Well yes, my dears! The world is just Midnight's for the taking every second that you lot aren't out there,"
"Well I was thinking in maybe about a month?" Lucas broke in. I shot him a glance that wasn't to say very nice.
"But we don't even know where Midnight is, do we? I mean I've tried to track him down, find any trace that he's left, and I haven't found even a whisper on him or the hounds. So how are we supposed to get to him when we haven't the faintest idea where he is?" Alan rambled.
"If I'm right, our good friend Indigo may be able to answer that question for you if you ask nicely." She smiled almost imperceptibly to herself.
I choked, "What?"
A look crossed her face that I couldn't quite identify. "Well you did have a dream last night, did you not?"
"Well yes, but-"
"Wait, hold on, what?" Alan interrupted. "Tell. Now."
I did. I retold the experience of the room with the glass table. Of Brayden, and that girl, Sophie. I stopped.
Go on Indigo. Josiah signed.
"But I don't understand something... Director, what's 735?" Her face became shrouded in somber darkness.
"Director?" Her eyes glistened with tears as she was yanked out of her daze. "What is it?" She took a deep breath, trying to regain control over her emotions.
"735 is a battle, we named it after the dead. Soldiers from both sides suffered great losses. 735 died in total. One of them was Josiah's brother." From his face, he obviously didn't need to be reminded.
"His name was Zachariah, one of Midnight's most trusted. He's said to have left his post to see Gabriel, Josiah's brother."
"Why would he do that though? It doesn't make any sense."
"They called them the Three Brothers. Josiah, Gabriel, and Zachariah. We got to Gabriel and Josiah first, but we were too late for Zachariah. Midnight recruited him first."
"Oh." That was all I could say.
"Anyways, it was the only time anyone that anyone Midnight trusted defied him. Why did you ask?" I continued the story of my dream, with Zachariah and how Brayden had been questioning his team's loyalties. I spoke of Erin and how she would be a big threat to us, since Brayden hadn't even had any suspicion of her. They all agreed. We also agreed with everything Lucas had said. We'd leave in a month.
