In the morning, when I woke up in the car, I was exhausted, but Lucas looked fine.
"What happened?" I questioned.
"I borrowed some of your strength for the drive. Hope you don't mind."
"What?" "That's my power, I can give and borrow strength." "Oh."
I felt a bit awkward, but I shrugged off the feeling of discomfort. "Where are we?"
Looking out of the window, I saw endless highway behind us. "We just passed the border about ten minutes ago. Do you wanna stop for breakfast?"
"Sounds good. Why not?" I said. We ended up eating at some place called Joan's Drive Thru. Hazel played with a piece of fuzz near my feet. After that, we were on our way.
*********
Two days later, we were at "headquarters". Hazel seemed anxious, but I guess it was to be expected from all our time on the road. When we arrived, we were in front of a small, gray, one story building."This is headquarters?" I asked. He laughed, but it looked pained. He hadn't slept in three days.
"You need rest," I told him. He didn't seem to hear me. He pressed a button on the earpiece that he was always wearing and a garage door around the back of the building opened. As we pulled inside, I saw that the entire building was empty. He tapped the earpiece again.
"We're ready for you." Immediately, the floor slowly started to descend. I began to see a huge cavernous warehouse that stretched as far as I could see in all directions. Tall, black, glass buildings stretched in every direction as far as I could see. They stretched all the way to the ceiling.
As soon as we reached the bottom, we drove off the platform and it raised back up to flawlessly cover the hole that it had made. As we drove to a covered area, I could see mobs of people cheering, but being held back by gates that ran to one of the largest buildings.
Lucas grabbed a few of my boxes and I did the same, leaving Hazel in the car. She mewed at the window, but I didn't pay any attention. As we walked past the crowds, people stared and I was the complete center of attention. I shied away from their stares, hiding behind Lucas as if that would make me disappear. We ran into the building as quickly as we could with the boxes. All eyes were still on me, but I felt a bit better within the closure of the building.
There was an elevator inside that was easily big enough for everything inside. We hurried in and I saw a glass plate on the wall, which Lucas stuck my hand on. The doors closed and we ascended what I estimated to be maybe sixty levels. The elevator car stopped, and the doors opened to my new home.
