The first thing I noticed was the darkness. It penetrated everything in its wake until the doors slammed shut behind us. We readied ourselves to fight as a light switch flicked on, the click echoing throughout the room. The clarity that now surrounded the room let me see something terrible, something that I'd never wanted to see ever since Lucas had told me about Midnight.

"Hello, children," He said, smiling, "Looking for me?" I wanted to run, but my legs told me not to. I hated him with every fiber of my being.

"What's wrong, love?" He appeared behind me, his southern voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Who are you?" I asked. I don't know why I said it, I knew who he was.

"You already know who I am, Indigo. I'm the darkest part of the day. Sweetie, I'm Midnight."

He reminded me of a villain in a horror movie. Skin barely hung onto his bones in some places, he slightly resembled Freddy Krueger, the same resentment burned in his bloodshot eyes. He moved to face me.

"You know, I always liked you best, Indigo. It's such a shame that we had to end up like this, on opposite sides. Your family really seemed to appreciate the work I was doing, more than the other families did." He began to pace around the room.

"Do you know how good it is to see you all in one place again?" I finally came to my senses.

"Again?" He laughed cruelly.

"Oh, right. You wouldn't know, not like they do," He gestured behind him as Brayden, Erin, Zachariah, and Sophie walked into the light. I had a wrestling match in my head until curiosity won out over caution.

"All right, I'll bite. What don't we know?" He responded quickly, a fire burning bright in his eyes.

"Don't you remember? No? How sad, I thought maybe you'd remember the one who made you what you are. I'm the one who gave you that serum," Serum? "I'm the person you all should be flocking to. However, that doesn't seem like it worked out quite right, does it?" His dark eyes flickered around the room, seeming like his eyes couldn't focus on any one thing.

Then out of nowhere, a single throw of Sophie's knife began the fight. It seemed that was all she was armed with. Was her power just not useful in a fight? It didn't matter how skilled she was, Portia simply transformed as soon as the knives left her fingertips, and soon, a grey wolf had Sophie pinned on the ground, baring its teeth at her terrified face.

I tried to pay attention to the fight, but then I saw them: my parents rid to the bottom of a pole. The others fought, completely engrossed in the battle in front of them. Josiah tried to keep Zachariah at bay, momentarily stopping him mid-stride, but it seemed to take a lot out of him. Each time Zachariah would break free, he would shoot what looked like lightning at Josiah, narrowly missing him. Alan and Robin teamed up on Erin, she only seemed to be able to hurt one of them at a time, so they fought together. However, we seemed to have the upper hand; we had their leader.

Brayden was clearly losing his fight, Lucas obviously had the better gift. He took away Brayden's strength and will to fight to the point where I couldn't even tell what power Brayden was using and he just gave up. We'd captured two of the hounds. Though our efforts on Zachariah and Erin were evenly matched, I thought the battle was going considerably well. Everyone was fighting so hard. And what was I doing? Standing there like an idiot wondering if I could make lightning too.

A boom struck the ground and cracks split the floor, shaking me out of my daze. I jumped over one of the cracks closest to me and ran to my parents. They remained completely still, like the battle was just white noise in the background.

"What did you do to them!" I screamed.

"Oh, nothing much..." A bodiless voice floated around me like the Chesire Cat, poisoning the air around me.

Then I was gone, no longer in the fire station, but in an open field. A new building was making itself around me, brick by brick. A small overhead landing towered over half of the room. The white walls rose around me until everything was built. My parents appeared on the top level, still tied to a quartz pillar.

"Dad! Mom!" I ran around the room, trying to find a way up to them, only to be greeted by empty walls. Needless to say, it was frustrating to the point of screaming.

"Ugh!" I was tempted to kick the wall, but then Midnight appeared, a cloud of darkness dispersing around him.

"That really won't do you any good, you know," He looked with a raised eyebrow at my foot slightly off the ground, getting ready to take my anger out.

"Well, yeah! I kind of figured that out already!" I shouted at him. He put his hands up in defense and backed away a few steps.

"Hey now, no reason to scream my dear girl," what annoyed me most was the innocent look on his face, like he hadn't wrecked all of our lives. I closed my eyes and looked down with tears starting to dew my face.

"There's all the reason in the world! I'm stuck here-wherever here is-with no idea how I got to this place-" He listened patiently as if he were a parent whose child was making an unreasonable request. "-My friends are probably dying as we speak, and God knows what you've done to my parents! Why can't you just leave me alone!"

When I looked up, he was gone.
