CHAPTER 22
- Zeki 's POV
"Come on, you have no other plan! Let me do this. Trust me, I'm not a kid." Love whines.
She's fourteen, she blatantly a kid. But she's right we have no other plan and we have to do something with this desert boy. We can't just let him slip away. However she's so young. How can we trust her, when she has no training? We have basically, plucked her out of a dark London alleyway a few days ago, how can we expect her to do something like this? The seconds are ticking by and the desert boy is approaching nearer. I internally groan, we need to do this now, instead of arguing over this. There is no other way.
"Fine, do it then I'll move in and nab the kid." I sigh, through gritted teeth.
Dese and Sap stare at me, with shock plastered on their faces. I roll my eyes: we have no choice, this is the best way.
Sap shoulders slumps and Dese nods slightly as she gets my reasoning.
" As soon as you distract them Love, join back into the circle. You need to be as quick as possible." Sap warns, worry slapped on his face.
Love nods gleefully "Yes, Sir." It's weird what makes this kid happy, I roll my eyes.
She let's go off mine and Sap's hand. We shut our eyes, knowing entirely what to expect, from when she showed her "light" the first time. This is going to be scalding.
My eyelids light up and heat is reflected off them, as Love does her distraction. After a couple of seconds, I hear whimpers and roars. The ground shudders and we rock slightly from the intense vibrations, from the creatures crashing on to the ground and then there's darkness. It's over. I open my eyes slowly, as do the others.
Some tnahpeles are writhing on the ground, others are buckling. Everything is in disorder, the way I like it. I glance around for the troublesome desert boy. He better have a good reason for hanging out with beasts.
I spot him, he's holding tightly on to the tnahpele he is mounted on, desperately clinging onto it's large grey ears. I sprint to them, I have no idea how I'm going to nab this kid. This beast is breathtakingly massive, but the boy has no control of it, as it keeps on kicking out in irritation. The effects of Love's blindness are unknown so I must act efficiently. At least we know one thing this desert boy is not afraid of heights, unlike me.
I'm just going to have tackle the bloody tnahpele, I'm strong. I can handle it, positive thinking Zeki, there's a first for everything. Maybe a miracle perhaps.
I slam into the tnahpele, pushing all my momentum and weight into it's side. I'm thrown in the air. It kicked me. How polite. I'm momentarily winded as I skid across the sand. The sand scraps the skin of my hands and neck, giving me sand burns. It may be blind but it sure can feel. I hear another thud next to me.
"Ooff." I hear a grunt. I turn painfully to see who it is, it better not be the others. I told them specifically that I am going to get this kid. So much trust my team have in me, it's overwhelming, sarcasm should be kindly noted here. Instead I see the boy sprawled next to me, his off the white, loose clothes are all scuffled up, looking very threadbare. Are all of these kids going to be wearing rags?
I grab the dark skinned boy's hand, so I can hoist him up to his dusty bare feet. He must have some serious blisters considering he's standing on white hot sand. The kid looks up to me with his black eyes and smirks. He yanks on my arm as if he's pulling himself up but then he vanishes making me topple over, my face meets the sand once again, from the momentum I was exerting in the civil gesture. What just happened? That cheeky little brat. Where did he go? I lift my head up wiping the sand out of my eyes. I probably have sand indents on my face because that was bloody painful. My handsome face.
