Chapter 40- Hugs and Triggers

Within a few hours, both Ashley and CC arrived at Jinxx’s house, and, to everyone’s surprise, even the girl herself, Abbie was perfectly fine around them. In fact, she did the last thing anyone would’ve expected her to do: she hugged them. She had to admit, she did miss eating pancakes with Ashley every morning

“Are you ok?” Jinxx asked. Abbie tilted her head.

“What do you mean? I thought this was progress,” she said. Ashley looked down at the girl, caught off guard by her hug.

“Well, yes, but… you’re not scared?” he asked. Abbie shook her head.

“I kind of am,” Ashley admitted. Abbie let go of him immediately.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you. If you want I can go away now,” she said hastily.

“No, no! It’s fine, just… CC?” Ashley asked, looking for help.

“We just expected you to be a little less… huggy, I guess,” CC offered. He hadn’t minded the hug, but he was used to getting surprise hugs from fans, since his hugs had a reputation of being the best of the best. Abbie nodded.

“Jake just has a way with words,” she shrugged.

“If you keep this up you might be able to go back home when I leave,” Ashley said, eyeing the girl.

“Home? Like with Andy? Like that home?” Abbie asked in a shaky voice.

“Well I didn’t mean the woods,” Ashley chuckled. Abbie took a step back and placed her hands on her head.

“In a busy city with people everywhere and him with her to just watch again. And make it hurt,” she whispered, falling to her knees. Ashley looked from Jinxx to CC then to Abbie.

“I’M NEVER GOING BACK THERE!” she screamed, changing into a horse and cantering at full speed towards the back fence. There were woods on the other side of it. She’d be able to clear it easily and run back to where she belonged. She charged towards it, gaining speed. They tried to run after her, but she was too fast.

“Abbie, don’t!” Jinxx exclaimed. He was a second too late. The black mare’s powerful legs pushed off the ground and she surged into the air, clearing the fence with inches to spare. She wobbly landed back on her hooves, wincing. She kept on charging away, despite the pain in her legs. She was so close she could taste it. Only a couple day’s journey. She weaved between trees. She could still hear them calling for her, but she’d be long gone by the time they got to the woods. A familiar sent wafted towards her nose. She sharply turned towards it and followed it. She needed him now more than ever. After a couple minutes, she found him, sitting on a log. She shrank back down to a human and sat next to him.

“You dyed your hair back again,” she said weakly, smiling. He nodded.

“I like it black better. Reminds me of you,” Jess replied. She smiled and hugged him, gripping his shirt tightly. He hugged her back, pushing her into him.

“I thought you died,” she whispered, burying her head in his neck.

“So did I.”
