Chapter 44- She Thought Things Were Better
Abbie no longer had the need to cut herself. She felt more at piece since she'd killed Gus. Her nightmares had stopped, and she loved Andy again, though not as much as she had at camp. She doubted she'd ever be able to love anyone like that again, even if it wasn't his fault. Still, the whole occurrence didn't do well for Andy and Juliet's relationship. Even though they fought more often than not, everyone was able to get more sleep since Abbie's nightmares disappeared. At least they did until she got the news.
It was a lazy Saturday afternoon, and Andy, Ashley, and Abbie had been sitting on the couch watching television. Juliet had been spending more time with her band than she had in the apartment, but it kept most of the fights at night, which was good for all of them. Everything seemed to be working out for the better. Or, that's how it seemed until they got the news.
Abbie remembered everything as if it was all a lucid dream. The pone rang. Andy got up and answered it. From there, everything went in slow motion. Andy sounded agitated and upset in the other room. Abbie and Ashley both looked at him when he came back.
"Abbie... Jess is dead." Abbie stiffened. Her eyes widened, though only slightly.
"He killed himself, didn't he?" she asked. Andy nodded slowly. Ashley wrapped his arms around Abbie's numb body. Andy rushed to her sighed and did the same. She buried her head in his chest, but didn't cry. She didn't want to cry. She knew he killed himself because of her. She didn't deserve to cry. She pulled out of both of their grips and stood up.
"Are you ok?" Andy asked. Ashley was too shocked to speak. Abbie nodded.
"I just want to be alone for a while," she whispered. She slowly walked to her room. Thoughts ran through her head faster than she cold ever dream of galloping. By the time she finished the short walk to her room, her head was spinning. She shut her door and sat on her bed, staring out the window.
"He's gone," she whispered. "Goddammit Jess. I gave you a second chance and you fuckin' wasted it!" she practically screamed, throwing her pillow at the wall. Instead of feeling sad or guilty, she was just angry. Rage filled her body. She couldn't find any outlet but to scream and throw all of her pillows, blankets, and even her chairs. She stood in the middle of her ruined room and fell to her kneed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "It's all my fault," she whispered. She covered her face with her hands and silently sobbed. She didn't know how long she stayed on the ground, but after what felt like centuries Andy walked into the room and hugged her tightly. She leaned into him, her cries getting louder and louder. "It's my fault! I killed him!" she screamed.
"He killed himself. I'm sure he was going through a lot more than just a break up," Andy comforted.
"I can't believe it. A waste of a life. He's lucky he got a second chance, and he just wasted it! Life can be so short. People make stupid mistakes and I don't get it. They only have one life to live and they need to live it!" Andy rubbed her head soothingly.
"I know. I wish other people could see that and not let anyone get to them. They're only making the pain worse."
A few hours later, Abbie woke herself, as well as everyone else in the apartment, with her screams. For the first time in weeks, she had a nightmare. She had been running through nothing but darkness, trying to find a way out. She saw a person and thought they'd be able to help. As she approached, she saw a noose attached to the body and turned it around to reveal Jess's face. She looked around her and saw everyone, even Iredessa and Ironhoof, hanging limply. That's when her screaming started. From there, they just got worse.
