Chapter 36- Sammi
Abbie looked out of Sammi’s bright red convertible. The wind blew across her face and played with her hair, reminding her of the feeling she got when she was a horse.
“There’s a big park with a wooded trail near my apartment, so anytime you want to go out and stretch your legs, let me know,” Sammi said over the wind. Abbie looked at her and nodded. “And, if you want, Jinxx offered to take you some weekends, too. He has a big fenced-in back yard, you’d love it,” she added longingly. Abbie nodded again.
After a few minutes, they pulled into a parking lot of a brick apartment building. Sammi took Abbie’s bags out of her trunk and helped the skinny girl out if the car. Abbie followed Sammi into the lobby and up several flights of stairs. Once they got to the door, Sammi turned to look at Abbie.
“Just remember that my home is your home. If you need anything, anything at all, just let me know,” Sammi smiled. Abbie nodded and followed her in. The room was pale green with a balcony at the back, and tan couch in the middle of a fuzzy white carpet. In front of the couch a black coffee table sat with various candles and magazines on the top, and a large flat screen tv sat perched on a black cabinet against the wall next to the door. In the back left corner, a hallway led to what seemed like the bedrooms and bathroom. A small kitchen lined the rest of the wall, which was painted pale yellow to show where one part of the room ended and the other started. A white counter with chairs protruded out of the wall that ran from the left corner almost to the door. On the right side, a key board lined the wall, as long as book shelves with various knick knacks decorating its shelves towered over the rest of the room. Sammi looked back at Abbie and smiled.
“Not as big as Andy’s, but it’s comfortable,” she said, leading Abbie into the first room on the right side of the hallway. Inside, a lavender room with a bed to the left of the door complete with a horse quilt, purple sheets, and matching purple pillow cases. On the left wall, a large closet sat with two mirror sliding doors. Across from the closet on the other side, a small tv sat on a stand. The back wall across from Abbie’s bed had two small windows, with a framed painting of a twisted-looking rabbit smirking down at who ever was in the bed. Sammi placed Abbie’s luggage on the bed.
“I’ll let you settle in. If you don’t like it, we can change it around if you want. I’ll be in the living room if you need me,” Sammi said, leaving Abbie alone in her new room. Abbie ran her hands around the outline of the horses on her comforter. Her eyes widened and her head pounded. She frantically stumbled out of her room and ran into Sammi.
“I need to go,” the skinny girl panted. Sammi furrowed her brow.
“The bathroom is right across the hall from your room,” she offered, nodding in the right direction. Abbie shook her head.
“No, I need to go. Like, now,” she panted, running her hands through her hair. “I don’t think I can keep it down much longer.” Sammi nodded and grabbed Abbie’s hand. Abbie had no problem keeping up with Sammi as they flew down the stairs and out the apartment door in record time. Abbie could smell the park. She pulled Sammi out into the busy Los Angeles street and, surprisingly, made it to the other side without a scratch.
“Abbie slow down!” Sammi exclaimed, trying to get out of the girl’s grip. For someone who hadn’t eaten in over two months, she was surprisingly strong. Abbie plunged into the forest, ignoring the path and creating her own. Before she was barely out of sight from the public, the weak little girl was replaced with the muscular, black mare. She took deep, heavy breaths and pranced around uneasily. Sammi almost screamed when she saw a horse that looked much different from the one before.
“I know, it’s weird,” Abbie said, finally starting to calm herself down. Sammi nodded. “I’m going to go explore for a bit,” she added. Sammi looked from Abbie to the trees then back to Abbie.
“Maybe I should go with you?” She asked.
“If you can keep up,” Abbie shrugged. Sammi laughed, but stopped when she saw the serious look in the mare’s eyes.
“Well I was thinking we could, or rather you could… you know,” Sammi said quietly. Abbie’s ears fell back and she looked behind her.
“Oh, I don’t know… I haven’t really eaten in a few months and haven’t been a horse in a really long time. I don’t think that’s the best idea.” Sammi nodded.
“But neither is you going out on your own.” Abbie thought for a moment.
“I don’t really need to go for a run right now,” she reasoned after a few minutes, shrinking down to a human.
“Are you sure?” Sammi asked. Abbie nodded. “Ok, well how about we get some food in you, then? What do you want? It has to be a small portion, but I can make quite a few different dishes you might like.”
“How about some pancakes?” Abbie asked.
“Sure!” Sammi exclaimed, taking Abbie’s hand.
