Chapter 24- A Phone Call

After a few hours, Abbie practically jumped up when she remembered she still had her phone. The truck was completely dark and the soldiers had only checked in on them once to give them dirty water and tiny portions of hard, stale bread, so she figured it’d be safe to use it.

“What is it?” Angela asked eagerly. Abbie looked around to make sure no one was there, even though it was pretty pointless, she still wanted to be safe. Once she was sure there weren’t any unwanted ears listening in, she spoke hastily.

“My phone! I still have my phone!” she whispered. Angela looked at her wide eyed. Abbie nodded and pulled it out of her pants. She turned it on and hid it under her shirt to muffle the noise. She was disappointed to find that she didn’t have any texts waiting for her, but in the confusion she probably figured that nobody had remembered the girl’s gadget, considering she rarely used it. She looked at her clock. It was around 7 am. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, hoping he would be up. With shaky hands she dialed the number, and slowly brought the speaker to her ear. The phone rang. It seemed to draw out, slower than ever. Just as she felt that he’d never pick up, his deep, velvety voice thick with sleep brought music to her hears.

“Abbie?” His voice was full of worry and relief.

“Andy!” she smiled. She could hear him shouting down the bus.

“Guys! Quick! Abbie’s on the pone! Come here!” There was the shuffling of feet, confused, exhausted voices, but cheers, too. There was rustling, and everyone’s voice was louder. Angela looked at her eagerly.

“Abbie, where are you?” It was Jinxx that spoke. Abbie heard sobs in the background. She figured he was the most stable one there.

“I don’t know. I’m in the back of some military truck with Angela,” she said, looking at the door to make sure it was still safe.

“What? Angela from the Black Army? Why are you in a military truck? Where are you going? Why do you even have a phone?” Ashley.

“Yeah. I don’t know. We were arrested for nothing, then brought here after questioning. My phone was in my back pocket- they never checked for it- and I hid it once I saw the soldiers. I was being questioned by the leader of the Wretcheds, or… F.E.A.R. I attacked him after he ordered the Wretcheds, or… Shadow Demons, as he called them, to attack me and the soldiers whisked me away.” There were gasps, but other than that, there wasn’t any sound.

“Hang in there, Abbie. We’ll figure this out.” It was CC. She smiled, but the smile quickly faded as the truck started rolling to a stop.

“Listen, Andy, I don’t have much time. Just please, don’t come for me. I know you want to, but just sit this one out. Everything will be ok. I promise. I love you,” she said. He was about to say something else, but she turned off her phone and hid it in her pants again, just in time. The doors opened and light flooded into the dark box.

“GET OUT!” one of the guards ordered harshly. The two frightened girls obeyed, practically falling out of the truck.

“Animals,” a high-ranking officer ordered in a thick Russian accent. Abbie looked at Angela.

“Excuse me?” Angela asked.

“Change into your animals!” one of the American soldiers said, pointing a gun at them. Abbie looked at Angela, confused. Angela lowered her head and nodded, then shrank into a rather fierce-looking leopard. The guards looked at Abbie. She sighed and closed her eyes, growing into a big, bay mustang.

“What beauties,” one of the soldiers said, reaching out to stroke Abbie’s muzzle. She shied away and took a step back, her ears falling against her skull in fear.
