"Hey, where ya going, Dally?" you asked your brother as he made his way to the door.
He sighed. "Out. Now, Rosie, no more questions, please."
"Aw come on, Dal!" you insisted. "You're going to hang out with the gang, aren't you? Can I come please!"
He smiled and ruffled your hair. "I guess, but just be cool."
"Thanks," you said. "Let me get ready, and we can go."
You slipped on your Converse and put your long, reddish brown hair up in a ponytail.
You jumped into Dally's car and watched out the window as he drove. He explained that it was his friend, Sodapop's birthday, so the gang was having a little party for him at him and his brothers' house.
When you two arrived, you shyly followed behind your brother.
"Hey, Dally!" a guy with rusty colored hair greeted. He noticed you and took in your thin, yet curvy figure. "And who is this?"
Dally put his arm in front of you. "My little sister, Rose, and if you touch her, I will hurt you."
Rusty haired dude put up his hands in surrender and moved back a step. "Alright. I got it." He turned and announced "No one touch the precious Rose Winston!"
There were a few other guys in the living room, sitting in various places. They all laughed a little, a couple trying to see around Dallas.
Dally turned around to you. "Go on and sit down over on the couch where I can keep an eye on you."
"Sure, okay," you replied, a mix of awkwardness and sarcasm in your voice. You walked over to the couch and cautiously sat down.
A boy about your age, 14, 15 maybe, was sitting at the other end of the couch reading a book. He looked up at you when you sat down and shyly smiled at you.
"Hi," he said, quietly. "I'm Ponyboy."
You smiled back. "Hi. I'm Rosie." You pointed to his book. "Uh, whatcha reading?"
He looked confused for a second before looking down at the book. "Oh right. I'm, uh, I'm reading The Great Gatsby."
"I just finished that," you remarked. "It's so good."
His expression brightened. "It really is. I'm just rereading it for English class."
This led to a conversation about books you each had read. You found out that you were both avid readers. You two were deep in conversation when you were suddenly lifted up and plopped onto a chair on the other side of the living room.
You looked up to see Dally giving you a stern look. "What's your deal?" you asked, a little irritated.
"No."
You shook your head and frowned in confusion. "What's that supposed to mean?"
He glanced over at Ponyboy, who was nervously sitting there. "No. Come on, let's go."
"But-"
"Come on," he demanded. He grabbed your wrist and practically dragged you out of the house into the car.
You didn't talk to Dallas for the next couple of days. You were just so mad that he would be so inconsiderate if your feelings. All you had done was start to make a friend, and he had to ruin it.
Dally was out for the day, leaving you at Buck's place with only a bunch of hungover partiers, pretty much all of whom were passed out. You were sitting in the room, reading, when the phone started ringing.
You walked down the hall to the phone and picked it up. "Buck's place."
"Uh.. Hey, is, uh, is Rosie there?" the other person asked.
"Yeah, you're speaking to her," you replied. "Who's this?"
"Hi Rosie, it's Pony," he answered.
"Oh hey, Pony! How- how are you?" you stammered.
"I'm good."
The phone conversation went on like that for a while, you two going back and forth awkwardly, until Pony decided to ask you something.
"Hey, uh, Rosie," he started, "do you maybe wanna go out to the drive-in with me tonight?"
You felt your heart skip a beat. "Of course! I- I, uh, mean sure thing. Sounds great."
You two made plans to meet at the Nightly Double at 6:00, so at 5:45, you were ready and out the door. You decided since the drive-in wasn't too far, you would be alright walking. You saw Ponyboy waiting in front of the entrance for you.
You went to pay for your entrance when he stopped you. "I got it."
"Are you sure?" you asked. "I have the money."
"Yeah, no problem." He paid the person and led you to a couple of empty seats.
Instead of watching the movie, you both sat there talking.
"Rosie, what're you doing here?"
You whipped your head around to face your brother. "Hey, Dal..."
He stormed over to you and pulled you to your feet. Pony jumped to his feet too. "Rose, you're going home now." He glared at Ponyboy. "Stay away from my sister."
You yanked your arm out of Dally's grip. "No! Dally, I don't see why you're trying to keep us apart so bad. Why can't we hang out?"
"I don't have to have a reason to tell my kid sister who to stay away from," he retorted.
"Oh that's bull," you spat. "I-I really like Ponyboy, and there's nothing you can say or do to change that."
Pony looked at you, shocked. "Really?"
You felt a blush creep to your face. "Yeah." You turned back to Dallas. "Now, big brother of mine, I think that broad you picked up is starting to look for another date." You pointed to the girl behind him, who was currently flirting with some guy.
Goodness gracious, I'm late. I'm so sorry about the long long wait. I really hope you like it despite how cruddy it is. M'kay.
