Withered Hopes

"Ho-oh," the brunette gulped, shaking the tiny bell between her fingers, "I summon thee." Just as before, not a reply had come. The sky remained blue without a glimmer of a sign. Lyra gave up.

"What good am I to think a legendary Pokemon would waste time on me," she said, head dropping in sadness. "Of course, my life is just full of disappointment as of late..." She collapsed to the wooden roof of the tower, sighing into a soft sob and many deep breaths.

"I'm no good."

She sobbed.

"My life sucks."

She buried her face in her small, weak hands.

"I'm nothing but a sorry loser that can't do anything."

The brunette had wasted her time believing she was the hero of such a prophecy. A weak girl like her wouldn't amount to anything. A red shirted brunette in blue overalls could most definitely be a hero, but not in this tale of woe. A crybaby. A child that played along with her role only to fall into utter heartbreak.

"I hate myself..."

*Blue's POV*

The ocean sky slowly transformed into a sea of rainbows. The unnatural scene made the hairs on my skin rise in uneasiness. If Lyra was atop that tower, she had been successful at summoning the beast. Maybe, just maybe she could tame it.

But the rainbows soon turned to grey, chalky dust clouds moving in and around the tower, visible from the heart of the city. If anyone knew anything about the guardian of the sky, it's that it had an aura of hope, not despair. Something was off.

"Mew Two is here," Giovanni announced, "I can feel his presence." The atmosphere seemed to thicken, making a simple breath difficult. The blackening sky revealed the purple figure hovering above the city. I swore I could see a smile escape the beast's lips as he watched over the tower we rest our hopes on.

Shadow ball.

The orb of darkness flew into the tower, weakening it's infrastructure. Lyra would have no hope in surviving at this rate. The city folk began to flee, hoping they could keep alive. But in time of danger like this, we needed to rescue the city.

"Blue, Crystal,  help the townspeople find a safe route out of town," Giovanni ordered, "I'll go hold off Mew Two and find Silver. We don't have much time, but I'm sure I can stall it until Lyra can hold her own... If she can..." I darted away with the blunette that reminded me of my hated former self, wishing that we could succeed. Knowing we didn't have any luck, I felt the tears start to roll down my face.

Where are you guys? I thought. Where are we when the best heroes have disappeared off the face of the earth?

*Silver's POV*

The tower shook violently, hands sweating as I hung tight to the ladders. I wasn't going to make it to her at this rate, no matter how hard I tried. But I continued anyways.

Step. Climb.

I needed her.

Step. Climb.

I loved her.

Step. Climb.

"Silver?"

My eyes grew when I realized I had made it to the top in such a hurry. Lyra had ducked herself low to the ground with her only means of protection. I hurried to her, ducking beside her.

"Lyra, are you okay?" I wrapped a consoling arm around the shivering brunette.

She let her head fall into my chest, shocked. "You actually came? For me?"

"Of course I did," I scoffed. "I may be a jerk but I'm not an asshole."

"I know, but, it's anything but safe here and I probably deserved this."

I was caught off guard with her statement. "You think you deserve this?"

"You don't think so? I'm such a failure and no one really cares. There's not much I can do. I can't find love, I can't keep friends, let alone make any, and I can't even summon a stupid legendary Pokemon. What use am I?" She backed away from me, tears forming as she attempted to hide them. "My biggest mistake was loving you."

My heart ached, but my mind knew it was true. We were family for crying out loud. There's no way we could ever be together! Stupid Silver.

"Silver, you should just go."

"I'm not leaving you."

"Silver, please."

"I won't-"

"Shut up and go!" She hid her puffy face in her small hands.

"Lyra-"

"You stupid piece of shit, go away. Why won't you just leave me alone already. I have a death wish and you won't even abide by it. You're just as useless as me!"

She was right. "And that's why I'm staying." She revealed her wet face, her large brown eyes glistening with surprise and regret. "I want to die with someone worthy. I want to die with you."

She smiled.

In that one sweet instant of friendship, of true innocent love.

In that brilliant moment of forgiveness and joy.

In a flash,

A rainbow darted straight down, claws digging into her shoulders, and flew high in the sky with a wail. There was nothing I could do at this point. My own life was worthless, and I knew I was meant to die alone the moment the tower took its final breath and collapsed...

*Lyra's POV*

I couldn't stop myself from screaming. I couldn't tell if it was from the height of the claws digging into my soft flesh, but either way I wanted it to end. "Let me go," I wailed. The bird gawked, shaking me furiously. "I thought you were supposed to help me!" Ho-Oh obviously didn't care. I knew he only wanted me for supper. His dinner plans were halted the moment a shadow ball rocketed past us.

"SQUAAAA!" Ho-Oh unleashed fierce fire from its mouth, missing the purple monster and sending poor structure ablaze. I held tightly to the bird's legs, hoping I wouldn't be dropped in the midst of battle.

"Ho-Oh, stop! You're going to hurt innocent people!" The bird shrugged and continued its pyromaniac methods. "Ho-Oh, trust me, I can help you win." It rattled me like a toy, sending me into silence. The two exchanged shadow balls and fire, destroying anything in their surroundings. There was no use in trying at this point. Nothing ever went to plan, apparently.

*Blue's POV*

"Hurry, this way people," I directed the citizens away from the danger. I looked towards the dark sky, biting my lip at the sight. The bird of legend was certainly fighting Mew Two as told in the prophecy, but it didn't seem tamed to me, that is, unless Lyra planned to be held and shook around violently.

Crystal didn't seem to care for the poor girl. She focused her efforts more on our mission than one her 'friend'. It was obvious that she didn't give a Rattata's ass about her, which seemed indecent even to me. But with nothing being my own business, I had to trust that the brunette would be safe and sound after the battle so I could focus on leading away the people.
